REED / WILKINS / BLIGHT; ON,CAN/ENG; 1915 Hello all, After receiving some new information, I felt compelled to share, with the hopes of some enlightenment. Harry Edward REED, Jr. married Ivy Violet Gladys WILKINS at Horfield, Bristol, 1915. Harry was 21 years old, a Corporal in the Canadian Armed Forces, from Toronto, Canada. Ivy was 20 years old, her father's name was Alfred WILKINS, a tailor, and her address was Gloucester Rd - does anyone know if this is in the town of Horfield? In 1917, Ivy delivers a boy to the world, Douglas Alfred REED, our Grandad, and lists the father as none! We were told that the biological father was a man by the name of Leslie BLIGHT, a lecturer at Bristol University, but I haven't been able to confirm this. Douglas was born in Reading, Berkshire, and Manchester Rd was Ivy's address- does anyone know if this address is actually in Reading, and why would they have moved there? Ivy's address in 1918 was Martells Terrace, Sandgate, Folkestone, I believe this is in Kent- does Sussex-Plus cover Kent as well? Ivy died of Epidemic Cerebraspinal Fever at The Sanatorium, Folkestone on July 14, 1918- is this Meningitis? Again, would it have been the Army that moved this family around so much in only 3 years? Harry was listed in attendance when Ivy died, strange, considering Ivy had clearly given birth to a child that wasn't his! We know that within a few years of Ivy's death Harry remarried and moved back to Canada. Once in Toronto, Douglas was promptly tossed into an orphanage on Yonge Street- if someone knew the name of it, I would appreciate knowing as well! When Douglas was 14 years old he was sent to a work farm in Bolton, Ontario- was this a common practice back then? At age 17, Douglas lied about his age and joined the Canadian Military, and then transferred to the British forces. He had an amazing Military career, even served with the SS (Secret Service?) in Britain, and told my husband that he was one of the paratroopers who rescued a scientist from the Germans off a Greek island- any war experts out there who know about this incident? The mystery and intrigue of Douglas' life didn't end there, his entire life was fascinating really, unfortunately, when he passed away in 1994 he took a lot of his secrets with him. I would sincerely appreciate any information or suggestions on how to continue to unravel the mysteries. My apologies if I rambled. Ketti kplant@telusplanet.net
