    3. PLANT; DBY,ENG; 1920 Eric Thomas PLANT was born in Much Woolton, Liverpool, which I believe is in the county of Lancashire (please correct me if I'm wrong), in 1920. His mother's name was Mabel HARDING, his father was John Thomas PLANT, a stud groom and poultry farmer. When Eric was born it lists the informant as Mabel, and then the address 37 Eaton Road, Sale. Would this be where Mabel was born or from? Eric married Ivy BAILEY in Whitwell, DBY, in 1944. At that time he and Ivy lived at 27 Malthouse Row, and Eric was with H.M.Forces. In 1947, Eric died on the same street where he lived and was later buried, Malthouse Row. He was struck by a lorry while driving his motorcyle home from work in Staveley, where he was a general labourer. Eric was taken to Victoria Hospital, Worksop, Nottinghamshire. The man who accidentally hit him was Ernest Marshall. Three months after Eric died, his son Eric Jr. was born, my father-in-law, and within a year from his birth he was an orphan, as Ivy died on the operating table in 1948. Eric Sr. was also a horseman in his lifetime, and apparently trained as a jockey in Norhtern Ireland. Does anyone know how I could confirm this information? During the war Eric was with the Cheshire Yeomanry, can anyone tell me how I would go about getting his service records? Eric had a sister Ethel as well, who's married name was Shirley, she had two sons, Darrel and William. Eric's father, John Thomas, sometimes went by just Thomas and was supposedly born in Wolverhampton, and had a brother James who was a Publican there. Any and all information and suggestions will be most welcome. Thanks Ketti from Calgary kplant@telusplanet.net

    3. WATERS; Cardiff,GLA,WLS; 1927 Hello, This is a real shot in the dark, but you never know...... In the summer of 1994 a young Canadian couple arrived by train at Cardiff General Station(S.Wales) and went to the tourist desk to arrange for a taxi. John Forster of Croeso Tours (who remembers the couple) picked them up and took them to two addresses in Cardiff; the first was 12 Lily Street and the other an unknown address in Grangetown. They explained that they were visiting places that were associated with their forebears, but neither the taxi driver nor the lady now living in 12 Lily Street knows the name of these Canadian visitors. I am interested in this event because !2 Lily Street is strongly associated with my Great Grandfather Rees Wilkins and the WATERS family who lived there for many years - RW died there in 1924. Rees' sister Mary Ann had married WILLIAM WATERS in 1865 and the couple lived there all their lives, bringing up a large family - mostly boys!! She died there in 1927 aged 86yrs. Other members of the Waters family lived in nearby Cyfarthfa Street. It may be that the visitors are not into Family History but if anyone can shed any light on this event I would be glad to hear from them so that I can contact the couple. Thanks, Ken Wilkins, Bristol, UK. (KenWilkins1@compuserve.com)

Her mother's name was Ivy Jane MACGILLIVRAY, her father was John BAILEY, a coal miner, hewer?- what mine would John have worked from? In 1944, Ivy married Eric Thomas PLANT, their address was Malthouse Row, Whitwell. Eric was with HM Forces and Ivy served with the ATS? for 4 years. In 1947 Ivy gave birth to my father-in-law, Eric John Plant. Eric Sr. had been killed only 3 months earlier, and in November, 1948 Ivy died at the Victoria Infirmary, Northwich, Cheshire. Does anyone have any idea why she would have gone all that way to have a simple operation on a prolapsed womb? Is there any way the information on her certificate is wrong? Eric Sr. was taken to Victoria Hospital, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, a much closer location to Whitwell. Any information/suggestions on this family would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone knows any of the streets I have mentioned, or perhaps knows where I could locate a map of Whitwell, I would love that! Thanks, Ketti Plant Calgary, Alberta kplant@telusplanet.net

    2. JOHNSON-PLANT
    3. REED / WILKINS / BLIGHT; ON,CAN/ENG; 1915 Hello all, After receiving some new information, I felt compelled to share, with the hopes of some enlightenment. Harry Edward REED, Jr. married Ivy Violet Gladys WILKINS at Horfield, Bristol, 1915. Harry was 21 years old, a Corporal in the Canadian Armed Forces, from Toronto, Canada. Ivy was 20 years old, her father's name was Alfred WILKINS, a tailor, and her address was Gloucester Rd - does anyone know if this is in the town of Horfield? In 1917, Ivy delivers a boy to the world, Douglas Alfred REED, our Grandad, and lists the father as none! We were told that the biological father was a man by the name of Leslie BLIGHT, a lecturer at Bristol University, but I haven't been able to confirm this. Douglas was born in Reading, Berkshire, and Manchester Rd was Ivy's address- does anyone know if this address is actually in Reading, and why would they have moved there? Ivy's address in 1918 was Martells Terrace, Sandgate, Folkestone, I believe this is in Kent- does Sussex-Plus cover Kent as well? Ivy died of Epidemic Cerebraspinal Fever at The Sanatorium, Folkestone on July 14, 1918- is this Meningitis? Again, would it have been the Army that moved this family around so much in only 3 years? Harry was listed in attendance when Ivy died, strange, considering Ivy had clearly given birth to a child that wasn't his! We know that within a few years of Ivy's death Harry remarried and moved back to Canada. Once in Toronto, Douglas was promptly tossed into an orphanage on Yonge Street- if someone knew the name of it, I would appreciate knowing as well! When Douglas was 14 years old he was sent to a work farm in Bolton, Ontario- was this a common practice back then? At age 17, Douglas lied about his age and joined the Canadian Military, and then transferred to the British forces. He had an amazing Military career, even served with the SS (Secret Service?) in Britain, and told my husband that he was one of the paratroopers who rescued a scientist from the Germans off a Greek island- any war experts out there who know about this incident? The mystery and intrigue of Douglas' life didn't end there, his entire life was fascinating really, unfortunately, when he passed away in 1994 he took a lot of his secrets with him. I would sincerely appreciate any information or suggestions on how to continue to unravel the mysteries. My apologies if I rambled. Ketti kplant@telusplanet.net
