He came from England to St. Mary's Maryland sometime before 1639. He was married to Elizabeth DAMPIER, who probably never came to America as he was engaged in coastal shipping and may have returned to England on many occasions. He never owned land and eventually returned to England permanently. Tradition has it that he was the father of fourteen children of whom only four are known to have come to America. ATHERTON / NETHERCLIFT; LND,ENG; 1800-1870 I am looking for the father of Matthew Netherclift who married Elizabeth. Matthew was born in 1774 he had 2 daughters and 2 sons one of whom was Frederick Matthew Netherclift who married Mary Anne Thayre of Stoke, Guildford, Surrey. They had several children , one of whom was Albert Edward Netherclift who married Sarah Anne Record in 1867. They also had several children, the one I am interested in was also called Albert Edward Netherclift. This son, (born 1 Aug 1870) at about 10years old , had his complete name changed to Arthur Eric Atherton! Can anyone suggest where I could find out about this change of name and was it very common?
