    3. Re: BURGESS; Lin,ENG; anytime In article <[email protected]>, Mike Smith <[email protected]> writes >BURGESS; Lin,ENG; anytime > >A friend of mine, not yet on the net, is looking for Burgess connections >in Lincolnshire, especially in the Gainsborough area. Any help would be >appreciated. > >I will forward information to him by snail mail; so a return address may >be useful. > >with thanks > >Mike smith > I am not researching the BURGESS name but your correspondent may wish to know that there is the transcription of the will of: Downhall Burges of Sutterton, Lincs dated 30th December 1615 According to the will, he had a brother-in-law named Robert Butler of Wapoll, a brother named Richard Drurye of London and two sons, John & Roberte Burges. Richard was named as executor. There was a small footnote: There is a small pedigree to be found in Visitation of Lincs 1592 - possibly the testator belonged to the same family. The above may be found in 'Lincolnshire Wills - Second Series 1600-1617' by the Rev.A.R.Madison, Lincoln 1891. A letter to the county record office should elicit photocopies (will & pedigree) for a small charge: Lincolnshire Achives Office, The Castle, Lincoln LN1 3AB England. David appears on the 1851 census, living with the family. There we lose track of him. Henry and William married and we have lots of information on them. Whatever happened to David? 3. HUGGINS; ENG; -1705 Looking for help on HUGGINS in ENG period 1680-1705. My 5GGF was John HUGGINS ( b.ENG est. 1680, d.USA,November 1743) of See Wee Bay, Carolina Colony (14 miles north of present day Charleston, South Carolina). Have found documentation including land grant of 1705 and have copy of his will. Have not been able to trace the HUGGINS connection back to England. It appears that John H. had a brother in Jamaica. Family tradition has two tales, one that he came to the Colony from England via Ireland via Bermuda and that he served in the Army in Irish War. Other is England via Barbados. Only other documented traces of connections in England is a recorded Patent purchase from a Dr. George Sinclaire of the Parish of St Martins in the fields in the county of Middlesex Gent and a resulting business venture of 12 July 1722 that shows him in partnership with: Archibald Earl of I’Cay William Stewart James Campell Henry Earl of Dolorain Charles Dubourgay, Lt. Gov. of Island of Jamaica John Campbell, Parish of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica John Hobart of Norfolk Stephen Point Esq. of Westminister Anthony Balagmer Esq. of Westminister Any help on my effort to find family origin in England would be most appreciated. Family stories have it that my great-grandmother Ella/Ellen N Smith, born ca 1855, died 1935) is a relation of Captain John Smith. He was an early American colonist, wrote many works on the New World, was reputed to have been saved from death at Powhatan's hands by Pocahontas, and governed the Virginia colony from 1608-1609. He returned to England, then had many ventures afterwards. He is not known to have married or had children, so perhaps it is the unnamed brother that is the key?? I would LOVE to get in contact with anyone knowing more about this family. Diana M Austring [email protected]

    1. BOWMAN William; ENG > NZL; c 1840-1890
    2. Bill Smith
    3. BOWMAN William; ENG > NZL; c 1840-1890 William BOWMAN was a sailor on the ship "OPAWA" on its voyage to Christchurch, New Zealand in 1878. He jumped ship in Christchurch and later (1879) married Maria WELLS (a passenger on that ship). It is rumoured that he was previously married prior to coming to NZ. I the papers for that voyage, and those of a previous vessel, he gave his place of birth as Liverpool and his age showing he was born in 1849. There is only one William BOWMAN born in Liverpool in that year, William Jeffreys BOWMAN. This person is included in the 1881 Census - a bookkeeper. Married to Janet Smith WILSON. The 1881 Census also shows a Margaret BOWMAN, wife of a seaman, (who was absent at the census). I have traced this to an association with a William Joseph BOWMAN born 1846 in Morpeth. Is anyone able to help in identifying the correct William BOWMAN? Regards Bill Smith "Bill Smith" <[email protected]>
