WATHEN; ENG; c 1750-1780 My 4th g. Grandfather was Thomas WATHEN. I don't have an exact birth year but am assuming it was 1750-1770 time frame. He was b. in Gloucester (I believe) and enlisted under Lord Cornwallis, the British General. In May, 1780 he was at the capture of Charleston, South Carolina in the American Revolution. He was made a prisoner of war and learned the shoemaking trade. He was later exchanged and went from New York to Shelburne Nova Scotia with 7000 other Loyalists in April 1783. He died in Nova Scotia in the 1800's after having married twice and fathering 11 children. His surname was changed from WATHEN to WORTHEN. I have extensive information on his descendants which I would be happy to exchange. I am interested in finding out his parents names, date of birth, siblings etc. Thanks for any help you may have. Sincerely, Heather Leighton Waddingham Ontario Canada [email protected]
NICHOLSON / FLETCHER; CUL,ENG; 1720- NICHOLSON/FLETCHER; CUL,ENG; 1720 - My great grandfather FLETCHER NICHOLSON, a coalminer was born in 1857 in Flimby, Cumberland. His father was JOSEPH NICHOLSON also a coalminer born 1832 in Dean, Cumberland. Referring to the IGI, I note the "possible" trail in Dean back through another FLETCHER NICHOLSON b 1807 Dean JOSEPH NICHOLSON b 1785 Dean FLETCHER NICHOLSON b 1751 Dean JOSEPH NICHOLSON b 1720 m 1742 ANN FLETCHER in Dean which perhaps explains the use of FLETCHER as a Christian name. This practice continued as late as the early 1920s when my uncle was named ERIC FLETCHER SMITH. This line of research needs to be fully investigated but I thought that I would post this now and see if anyone else has connections to this family or to ERIC FLETCHER SMITH as my mother lost contact with him in the 30s when her parents both died. Re: BOWMAN William; ENG > NZL; c 1840-1890 My Great Grandfather was also William Bowman, born in Corbridge, Northumberland in 1827/1828. He married in1854 and moved to Canada. Here is a posting I made some time ago. I wonder whether the William Joseph BOWMAN born 1846 in Morpeth could be a relative. ______________________________ Parents of William: James BOWMAN; Wife unknown Parent of Elizabeth: Robert WALKER ; Wife unknown William BOWMAN b.1827 or 1828, d. January 22, 1906, Guelph, Ont. Canada married Elizabeth WALKER, b. Jan. 26, 1828; d. May 27, 1918, Guelph, Ont. Canada William's Birth Place: Corbridge, Northumberland UK ELizabeth's Birth Place: Northumberland or Durham, UK Married: St. Mary's Church, Gateshead, Durham, Co., June 10, 1854 ____________________________________________________________________________________ Both fathers' names were obtained from the Marriage Record of William & Elizabeth. We believe that William Bowman's Headstone in a Guelph, Ontario cemetary lists his birth year as 1828. His marriage record indicates that he was 27 yr on June 10, 1854, which would have made his birth year 1827. At time of marriage, both William & Elizabeth resided on Charles St., Gateshead, DUR. Co. After their marriage, they left the UK on Aug. 29, 1854 from Liverpool on the sailing ship, THACKMAXAN, arriving in New York, Oct. 11, 1854, then travelling to Ontario, Canada. I have searched the 1851 census for both Corbridge, Northumberland AND Gateshead, Durham Co. without having located families having as the HEAD of family - "James" BOWMAN, OR "Robert" WALKER. We have NO information on their wives. I have extracted ALL of the BOWMAN & WALKER FAMILIES from both 1851 census records (Corbridge [5 pages, Wordperfect] & Gateshead [8 pages]) for anyone who is interested. We believe that Elizabeth Walker had a brother, Richard, as well as a sister, Jane, who may have married an Ellerington. Richard Walker and his wife accompanied William & Elizabeth to Canada. A Robert Walker "Jr" and A George Liston were witnesses on the marriage document.. Robert "Jr" was probably another brother of Elizabeth's. _________ Bill Smith wrote: > BOWMAN William; ENG > NZL; c 1840-1890 > > William BOWMAN was a sailor on the ship "OPAWA" on its voyage to > Christchurch, New Zealand in 1878. DEANE Harry; ENG; 1917-1998 If your name is DEANE or you know someone who has this name, could you please forward the following information request. Harry DEANE married Alice EVES abt 1916. They lived in the Bromley, Kent area and had two children William (Billy) and Joan. The Eves family lived 163 Homestead Road, Bromley in 1921 and Harry and Alice lived nearby. William had a son born abt 1921 named Anthony Harry Deane. Alice was the only Eve left in england when her family immigrated to New Zealand in 1926. I believe the family was originally from South Shields, >Durham as Sidney was born there on Sept. 15, 1892. > This is probably of no use at all. My wife is a Leighton. Her grandfather John Thomas Leighton (Tommy to all who knew him) was born in a village called Middleston nr Bishop Auckland, Co.Durham in Sept 1912. Her Great Grandfather Noah Leighton, is believed to have come from Wales as a boy in the 1890's. Apparently a lot of miners were moved from Wales to work the coal fields in the Durham area. As Leighton is a Welsh name there may be lots of Leightons born in Co. Durham -- Phil Townsend Phil Townsend <[email protected]>
