DEGGERTON / DIGNAM Bridget; MEA,IRL > TAS,AUS; b.c. 1823 Bridget was born in Drogheda, Co Meath, Ire 1823 and DEPORTED to Tas, Aust in 1845. On the birth on her first child Bridget gave her maiden name as DEGGERTON, for her marriage she gave the name DIGNAM. She was tried and sentenced to 7 years deportation at Longford, Co Longford on January 2nd,1845 for stealing a shawl. Her convict record also shows the name DIGNAM. Bridget could read. Could DEGGERTON be Gaelic for DIGNAM or is there some other explanation for the dual use of these surnames? I am stuck on this and would appreciate some assistance.
