I'm trying to find out about a Catherine Middleton, b1796 at Mallerstang in Westmorland. She married William Metcalfe at Kirkby Stephen on 22 May 1822. Catherine died in 1878 aged 81 and is buried at St. mary's church, Mallerstang. I think it may be possible that your samuel middleton is her nephew (ie Catherine's brother was Samuel's father?) but I have no real evidence for this. Do you know any more about your middletons? I am descended from the Metcalfe side of the family. Please let me know what you find out. Thanks.
