ALL; BC,CAN/NT,CAN; 1800- Book "...and Mighty Women too; Stories of Notable Western Canadian Women" by Grant MacEwan, 1975. 8.5" x 5.3", 275 pages, in GOOD condition, softcover book illustrated with pictures of these women. The author focuses on the women whose contribution to the West has been important but certainly less known. There are 32 women included in these profiles and they have in common only their sex and the fact that they all acquired a reputation - of one kind or another. And through their reputations they contributed to the quality of life in Western Canada. The author selected women from all walks of life and with a wide variety of interests, from the lowliness of Mother Fulham, Calgary's dirty and indomitable keeper of pigs, to the eminence of the great artist, Emily Carr, and the internationally renowned historian and educationist, Hilda Neatby. Some of the women, such as Mary Macleod, wife of the commissioner of the NWMP, were notable mainly because of their ability to cope with the conditions of frontier life and, in doing so, to make it more bearable for others. In another time and place, they would likely have been just one of the crowd. Some gained recognition because of their work for the West-journalist Cora Hind and scientist Margaret Newton. In a land of few people, many hardships, and such glaring causes as women's rights and prohibition, there were many opportunities for women to shine and many were the women who rose to the occasion. The author has given all women of the West a fine salutation here! GREAT book!
