    3. CLARKE; Portumna,GAL,IRL; 1815-1895 Researching John Samuel Clarke (1815-1895), farmer and agent for Grand Canal Company. Lived and died in Portumna, Co. Galway, with his wife, Eliza Hackett, m. ca. 1838, Co. Offaly. Both practicing members of the Church of Ireland in Portumna. Six children lived to adulthood: Jane H. (b. ca. 1839) m. Drought, immigrated with family to Canada (descendants found); Samuel John (b. 1843) m. Mills, eventually immigrated to Canada (descendant found); Thomas H.M. (b. 1845) m Hamilton, died in Jamaica, leaving one son; Lucinda (Lucy) E. (b. 1848) nm, died in Ireland; Josephine M. (b. 1856) m. Foley, died in Ireland leaving 8 descendants; and John Frederick (Fred) W. (b. 1861) immigrated to Australia, m several times, left numerous descendants (found). Can find no record of Clarke antecedents although there are many other Protestant Clarkes in area of Portumna and Woodford where they lived. Family story is that he came from Donegal but have no corroboration. He and his wife and a daughter Eliza M. (Lizzie) are buried in the Church of Ireland churchyard in Portumna. Elizabeth W.
