Re: SETTLER Sarah; DEU > Baltimore, MD,USA; 1861 Susan, I apologize for posting this on the open forum, but I could not get thru on you personal address, norlight.net kept kicking it back! Take care, Bob Nestruck Hi Susan, Thanks so much for your information on the name Settler! I did not give a specific site in Germany because, as of yet, I do not know what city to specify. Your list of names has a familiar ring. Sarah and her husband Johann Böhnlein had 6 children. I have 5 baptismal records with 5 different spellings for Sarah's last name. In fact, on one, the Priest nearly failed to record her name. He left a scribble where her last name should have been. I have Sittler, Sidly, Sitzler and only on my Grandmother's record was the name Sarah Settler recorded. I failed to get a copy of the last record. I'll pick it up next time I am at the archives, but I remember her name being recorded as Cecelia Sidnez! I think the priest was trying to fill out the baptismal record from memory. My Great-Grandfather was Catholic, but Sarah was not, so he probably thought it did not matter. The Czech/Austria/Hungary angle is interesting. On Sarah's deather certificate her oldest son, as informant, gave her father's first name as Alex. This didn't sound like a traditional German name, so it sounds like that might be the area to check into. If I can pry a little. Could you tell me what religion your Grandfather's first wife was? I am trying to trace thru Church records, because we lost a lot of civil records in 1904..Most of downtown Baltimore burned to the ground, including City Hall. So we are having trouble getting Birth Certificates and the like. I certainly will share with you any info I find. I will add you into my address book with the reminder of Settler. Take care, Thanks again! Bob Nestruck Bnestruck@aol.com
