THOMAS John R / PEATON Elizabeth; VA,USA; 1798-1846 I am looking for information that would help me find the ancestors and siblings of John R. Thomas, who married Elizabeth Peaton in Norfolk Co., VA January 3, 1826. According to the property tax records of Botetourt County, he was a poor laborer, who was doing well to own as many as 3 horses. He never owned land and died 1842. Elizabeth died in 1846. It appears that he served in the 48th Virginia Militia during the War of 1812. I do not know what the "R" in his name was for. A few records also record him as "John Lapps Thomas". We found one property tax record that included both names. Their son, Nathaniel Grigsby Thomas, was born in 1827 or 1828, was a Confederate private in the War between the States, and died in 1865.
