KOSCIELNIAK; WV,USA / NJ,USA; 1910 I need some IDEAs on where to search. Here is my situation. My grandfather Michal came from Poland/Austria and arrived at New York in 1910, two weeks before the 1910 CENSUS. According to the passenger list he was planning on traveling to Detroit and work with his brother in the factories. I looked up the address in the 1910 CENSUS for Michigan and they are not listed. They do not appear as boarders at any house on that street. Grandpa did tell us that he and his brother (or brothers) worked at the coal mines in West Virginia and New Jersey. I never thought New Jersey had coal mines but if there was any, what counties would they be in. For the 1910 CENSUS, West Virginia is index but New Jersey is not. I searched through the 1910 CENSUS for West Virginia with no success. The next step would be to search, line by line, the CENSUS for New Jersey. I just want to narrow it down to the New Jersey counties which had coal mines. I am NOT ruling out West Virginia. Would the WV miners be 'indexed' in the 1910 CENSUS if they lived at the coal mine? If they were not indexed living at the coal mines, what counties had coal mines? Is there somewhere to write for information about employment at coal mines? Eventually my Grandpa and his brother (or brothers) went back to the factories in Detroit some time around 1912. Is there a better way to approach this research? I would apprecriate some suggestions.
