    1. ROGERS Ellen / RODGERS Ellen; Enniskillen,FER,NIR; 1870-1880
    2. ROGERS Ellen / RODGERS Ellen; Enniskillen,FER,NIR; 1870-1880 I am interested in locating records for the birth of my paternal grandmother Ellen Ro(d)gers or hearing from anyone related to her or her ancestors. Her maiden name is listed as Rogers or Rodgers in various other records. Her death certificate issued in Montgomery Co., Pa, USA lists her mother's name as Mary Ann MacGuiri (MacGuire?) and her fathers name as ? Rodgers. I am also interested in obtaining a marriage record for Ellen's parents. Ellen's marriage application in Philadelphia, Pa, USA lists her birthdate as 25 November 1879, but other records show varying dates around this period. Her birthplace is listed as Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Ireland. She was a Roman Catholic. Any assistance in tracing this branch of my ancestors is greatly appreciated. Thank you Thomas Barnett tjbbarnett@aol.com

    1. FOLEY; KER,IRL>COR,IRL; 1830-1900
    2. Elizabeth W. Knowlton
    3. FOLEY; KER,IRL>COR,IRL; 1830-1900 Looking for information on family of Peter Foley (first a schoolteacher, after 1870 a Church of Ireland, that is Protestant, minister) of Drummahane and Mary Rogers McCarthy of Glantane who married in Kilshannig parish near Mallow, Co. Cork, in 1853. I have the parish record of the marriage. Mary had a father named William W. R. McCarthy, a schoolmaster, and a sister named Eleanor who taught school in Kinsale and lived until around 1910. Peter Foley was born in Co. Kerry around 1831. The story is that his family was Roman Catholic and converted to Church of Ireland about 1843. The father, Malachi Foley, was a schoolmaster and scripture reader also; and there is a record of a man with that name teaching in Cahirciveen, Co. Kerry, in 1826. Peter attended TCD around 1856 and was a minister by 1870. He served in Sligo and finally in Ballycastle, Co. Mayo, where he and Mary were buried in the CofI churchyard in 1896 and 1897 respectively. I have collected the clergy records of him and his son and uncovered the gravestone in Mayo. Peter also had a sister Agnes born in 1840. This means their mother must have been born by around 1800. I suspect her name was Agnes also. The sister Agnes married in 1864 a constable named William Smyth whose father was George. They were both residents of Millstreet, Co. Cork, where Agnes was a teacher. Peter and Mary's children were William Malcolm, Thomas or Thomas Winspeare, and Anna Elizabeth (born 17 years later than William in Co. Sligo). Four other children with the names of Alfred Peter, Eleanor Agnes, Arthur Winspeare, and Mary Gibson died near birth. Thomas Foley was an alcoholic and eventually left for the U.S. or Canada but is said to have left no descendants. Anna Elizabeth became a schoolteacher in England, where she died before 1960. William M. (b. Aug. 15, 1854) graduated from Trinity College Dublin, married twice (Hackett and Clarke), and had a large family (all branches traced) while following a successful career as a minister in the Church of Ireland also. He served in Askeaton, Co. Limerick; Ballycastle, Co. Mayo; and Tralee, Co. Kerry, among other places, and died in Dublin in 1944. He is said to have been born in Coachford, Co. Cork, and his baptismal record is in the parish of Magourney. He said once that he remembered as a child in Skibbereen, Cork, hearing the coachman's horn in the night when the stage came in, before there was train service there. His mother's parents were possibly married in the Diocese of Cork and Ross. Any clues or tips on these Protestant Foleys? Elizabeth W. Knowlton KnowltonEW@Compuserve.com

    1. MCARTHY; COR,IRL; 1829-1910
    2. Elizabeth W. Knowlton
    3. MCARTHY; COR,IRL; 1829-1910 On April 2, 1853, in the district of Mallow, in Kilshan(n)ig C. of I. Church in the Diocese of Cloyne (Church of Ireland), County Cork, Mary Rogers McCarthy, (daughter of William McCarthy, schoolmaster) born in County Cork and a resident of Glantane, Cork, married Peter Foley (son of Malachi Foley, a Scripture reader, amd sister of Agnes Foley), born in County Kerry and now a schoolmaster residing in Dromohane, Cork. The marriage was witnessed by William and John McCarthy. I have this parish record and a copy of Griffiths Valuation that shows a William McCarthy renting a house and school endowed by Lady Cotter in Glantane. I can find Kilshannig baptisms for four girls named Caroline Elizabeth, Rachel, Esther Phillippa, and Rebecca Winspeare who had parents named William Rogers McCarthy, a school teacher, and Eleanor or Ellen in the 1840s and 1850s. Family lore says that Mary had a sister named Eleanor who ran a little school and survived until WWI when her belongings were left in a Cork warehouse for a grand-nephew and destroyed in the Cork fire. Recently I located aunt Eleanor in the Munster 1886 directory as the head of the National Infants School in Kinsale, Co. Cork, and in the 1901 Irish census as a teacher in a primary school she ran out of her small house. Her sister Rachel is living with her, thus suggesting that the above baptisms are Eleanor and Mary's sisters and that William and Ellen/Eleanor the parents are their parents too. Eleanor states that she was born in "Cork City," so I need to search there for Mary's baptism also. A transcription for Cork and Ross Diocese Marriage License [applications?] lists a William Winspeare Rogers McCarthy and Eleanor Hegarty, 1829, who I think may be Mary's parents. Mary's eldest son remembered hearing the coachman's horn at night in Skibbereen (probably around 1860) so perhaps these McCarthys were from that area. Mary named her children William Malcolm, Eleanor Agnes, Alfred Peter, Arthur Winspeare, Mary Gibson, Thomas Winspeare, and Anna Elizabeth (most of whom did not survive). Please reply only if you have connected your McCarthys to these areas of County Cork as there were approximately 25,000 McCarthys in Ireland in the 19th century. These people were Protestant, never left Ireland, and did not go to the USA. Thanks. Elizabeth W. Knowlton KnowltonEW@compuserve.com

    3. Re: ROSENBAUM / ROSENBALM; VA,USA; 1810-1835 There are languages in Europe where the pronounciation of ...balm is very similar to that of ...baum. For instance do they have in Poland a letter L with a / (or is it \?) over the upgoing line of L which is pronounced very similar to German U or English oo as in book. This could explain the change. -- Regards Henning Boettcher Switzerland Janice Smith <bce@earthling.net> schrieb in im Newsbeitrag: 8a8qth$aj8$1@bl-1.rootsweb.com... > ROSENBAUM / ROSENBALM; VA,USA; 1810-1835 > > Hello, I am looking for information regarding the time when this name was > changed. 3. WALKER Robert Pollard / SWEET Blanche; Bristol,GLS,ENG; 1907- Hi everyone, I am trying to trace descendants of the above family with a view to establishing links with the family my grandfather left in England when he emigrated to Australia. He gave the following address as his next-of-kin when he enlisted in the Australian Army in 1914. The address given was: Mrs. R. Walker Rockby (or Rockly) Place Kingswood Bristol My grandfather's name was Isaac William SWEET, and Blanche was one of his younger sisters. My research to date shows me that Blanche married Robert Pollard Cameron WALKER in 1907, and had three children - Ronald Cameron, Betty and Robert William. For whatever reason he did not seem to maintain contact with the U.K. after arriving in Queensland, Australia. Any help would be greatly appreciated. But it is not always clear what some of the relationships are. Clearly, some of the names are very common in their own countries, so what I am looking for are some positive means of identifying the links between them.
