The records are available from the Tipperary Heritage Unit in Tipperary Town - their site is at http://www.iol.ie/~thu. Its not a free servce but it is fast and they have spent the last 14 years indexing the records of 46 parishes. Hope that helps. Mac "Mac" <comms@iol.ie>

MCDERMOTT; UIE,IRL; 1870 For usenet.soc.genealogy.surnames.ireland 1. After professional research, I have come to a halt in tracing my family history. 2. The last recorded family entry is of 16 October 1870 when James McDermot [sic] married Catherine Grenan [sic but later changed to Greenan] at Downpatrick RC Chapel, County Down. James' father was called Edward. James had several children but the fact that they were all registered under different surnames has not helped my research; I assume illiteracy and phonetic spelling were the cause. 3. James' children were twins Ellen and Margaret McKernon [sic][b 5 July 1872 inj Ballylucas], James McKernon [b 1874 in Rossglass], Edward McDermott [b 8 Dec 1876 in Rossglass], John McKernan [b 1 May 1879 in Ardtole], Patrick McKernan [b 15 July 1881 in Killough, Downpatrick], William McDermott [b 1884 in Killough d 1885],Mary McKermott [b 18 Sept 1886 in Rossglass], and Catherine McKermitt [b 22 Feb 1891in Ballyvaston]. 4. My grandfather was the Patrick McKernan mentioned above. He was in fact Patrick McDermott and married Rosanna Carlile [b 17 Jan 1883 in Cork. She died on 9 Nov 1965 in Ilford, Essex, England. He died in Ilford on 13 Jan 1942. 5. If anyone has any trace of the family, I would welcome hearing from them and sharing information. I am best contacted on patrickmcdermott@hotmail.com 6 Many thanks in advance mcdermott <mcdermott@glasnet.ru>
SANDFORD, Alexander; LND,ENG; 1910- The above named was my father's great-uncle born in Belfast 21/3/1879 and moved to West Kensington, London, either prior to or immediately after WW1. He married and had 5 children, Maude, Ada (after her mother), Winnie, Kathleen (or possibly Cathrine) and James. Alexander was the son of William John Sandford and Margaret Ann Dougan. Believed to have served with either the Royal Irish Rifles or London Irish Rifles during WW1. Any information on any of the above or their descendants would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance Stephen Sandford ssandfor@globalnet.co.uk

SYKES James; ENG; c. 1858 Hello Listers My great grandfather James SYKES sailed from Liverpool on the clipper ship Red Jacket, bound for Melbourne, Australia. The date was 14th February 1858. I do not know whether this was the departure date, or the arrival date. He was 14 years old, and appears to have travelled alone. I have no idea where he came from, or where his folks lived. I need some help with this problem, or some assistance with a starting point. I have tracked down his subsequent marriage, and family in Tasmania, but the UK connection is broken. Can anyone help? PETER, E A; JPN; 1874 Buried "in the little cemetery apportioned to the foreign community" at some coastal/naval port in Japan is/was Edward Alexander Peter, died aged 28 on 25 Nov 1874 at Formosa. He was Chief Officer of the Japanese steamer, "Acantha". How can I trace where in Japan he was buried (we have a photo of the grave); find out whether the grave still exists; and discover more about the Japanese Navy and the steamer Acantha? There was a Mr INGLIS who was a "distant relative" at the burial ceremony (in which sailors of HM Gunboat Mosquito under Capt Young assisted. Revd H. Burnside officiated). Would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Sincerely David Morris Kimberley South Africa "D. Morris" <dmorris@kimberley.co.za>
