    2. CHINIQUY / CHINIC / CHINQUE; QC,CAN/MN,USA; 1770-1900 Greetings to all. I am looking for CHINIQUY/CHINIC/CHINQUE; QC,CAN/MN,USA; 1770-1900 There are many other spellings of this name which I ask that you consider as well: CHENNIQUE, CENEQUI, CHINIGUAY, etc. It has been pronounced SHIN-IH-KEY at least since the 1850s, probably before. The name has Basque origins, probably as ETCHENNIQUE. Martin CHENNEQUI or ETCHENNEQUE was born on 30 March 1795 in Santa Fe, Murillo El Cuende, Navarra, Spain. He married Marie OURCODILLE and had issue, Martin Louie CHINIQUY or CHENNEQUI. Martin Louie CHINIQUY or CHENNEQUI [or other spellings] seems to have been born in Spain. He came to New France with the French Navy - either as a soldier or as a naval officer or seaman. He was also called "the Navigator". Martin Louie CHINIQUY remained in Quebec and married three times: to Marie Suzanne ROLLET in 1760, to Marie Louise GRENET in 1768, and to Marie Elisabeth PELLERIN in 1774. I have names and some dates on the issue of these marriages. I am trying to identify the surname variants used by the descendants of Martin CHINIQUY the Navigator to as to locate those descendants and their family lines. Some may have emigrated to Illinois and Minnesota in the US. We know that there were individuals in Canada (Quebec City) who used the surnames CHINIC and CHINC and even CHINK (Bellechasse & Levis). We also occasionally see the surname CHINQUE (anglicized to SHANK?) - are these derivatives/versions of CHINIQUY???? Anyway, you see how it goes. I will be most grateful for any feedback, whether information or surmise. Thank you! Virginia Crawford VCrawf@aol.com Carmel Valley CA
