    3. ALL; GBR > ZAF; 1824- Book "British Settlers in Natal 1824-1857; A Biographical Register, Vol. 1 Abbott-Ayres", by Shelagh O'Byrrne Spencer, 1981. BIG Hardback book, INDEXED, 11.5" x 8.5", 128 pages in GOOD CONDITION, illustrated & with maps. It was the dream of riches to be won from the ivory trade the first lured British hunter-traders to Port Natal in 1824 (to South Africa from Britain). This colorful band of adventurers was augmented by a steady trickle of fortune-seekers, missionaries and traders who made their way to Natal from the Cape Colony. Once British rule was firmly established in 1845, schemes were set in motion by Joseph BYRNE and others to bring permanent settlers from Britain to develop the new territory and under their auspices several thousand emigrants had come to new homes in Natal by the end of 1857. Who were they? How did they come? Where did they settle? Whom did they marry? Who were their children? Answers are here in this book which contains the biographies of 93 of these early Natalians. A GREAT reference book that will serve interests in genealogy as well as historians and the exploration of European expansion and colonization in not only South Africa but also Britain's former colonies of settlement! The biographies included are from Abbott-Ayres but a more complete listing of names with some births are also included. Contents also include "Immigrant vessels"; "Related surnames"; "Roll of British settlers in Natal, 1824-1857"; "Source List", etc. The "British Settlers in Natal, 1824-1857" includes ALL NAMES, not just the A's and is complete at the time of this book going to press; this list includes 16 pages consisting of this list of names, some with birth dates! GREAT Reference book! 3. HALL, Peter; LND,ENG; 1930- Book "Peter HALL's Diaries" by John Goodwin, 1984. Hardback thick book with dustcover 9.5" x 6.3", many illustrations, 507 pages, INDEXED in EXCELLENT nearly new condition! Book was originally $25.00 new in 1984. Peter Hall born 1930 in Bury St. Edmunds in London he ran the tiny but adventurous Arts Theater in London during the 1950's. At 29 he became director of the Shakespeare Memorial Theater at Stratford-on Avon. Probably no one has had as much effect on the British theater of the last 2 decades as Sir Peter Hall, founder of the Royal Shakespeare Company and current (1984) director of the National Theater. In his intimate diaries, Hall Chronicles the 8 frenzied years between 1872, when he was first approached to succeed Lord Oliver as director of the National Theater-which was then preparing for its historic move from the Old Vic to its 3-auditorium "palace" on London's South Bank-and 1980, when the theater had achieved triumphant life in its new home. An exciting and vivid narrative of Peter Hall's opening years as Director of London's National Theater. Frank and energetic, the author gives a day-to-day account of his struggles, ambitions, successes and disappointments, as well as a perceptive revelation of his own character. It gives glimpses of the mysterious process of rehearsal, of its sequences of elation and stalemate, and how some of the greatest English actors hew out a role. It gives affectionate and very funny vignettes of the powerful and the famous: Harold Pinter, the worse for the brandy, sitting on the floor of a taxi and demanding to know who has moved the seat; Sir john Gielgud, facing the role of Prospero, like, ‘an extremely nervous racehorse,' in a tizz about his costume, his headgear, his wig. He write of genius Samuel Beckett, the comically aggressive Marxism of Edward Bond but he is closest to Harold Pinter. He admires many actors, but Sir Ralph Richardson is supreme-the benign eminence grise of Sir Peter's life. FUN thick Book! 3. LAMOTHE / LOUISEIZE / VELINO; ON,CAN/QC,CAN; 1905- Hi! I am desperately seeking some information on my mother's family. My mother was Mafalda Lamothe, born 11/10/1907, in Ottawa, Ontario. She was the daughter of Gilbert Lamothe & Amelia Louiseize. As I was told, Amelia died in childbirth when my mother was 2 years old (1909). I do not know if the child lived or died, but the name of Henri was supposed to have been given to him. Gilbert died when my mother was 4 years old (1911). She was placed with the Gray Nuns of the Cross in Hull, Quebec, until the age of 15. At that time, she was taken by an aunt ( Mercy Lamothe, sister of Gilbert) and they moved to the New Orleans area. Mercy Lamothe was married to Gustave Charles Velino, who was a world famous chef. He spent many years as Head Chef at the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec. In addition to Gilbert & Mercy Lamothe, there was also another sister Alexine, who married Frank Brousseau. They lived in the Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania area. This is all the information I have on this family. It is medically imperative that I try to learn more of these people. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 3. WAYMAN John; GLS,ENG; -1850 Sometime before 1837, John WAYMAN (or WEYMAN) married Martha whose maiden name is not known. Place of marriage might have been North Nibley GLS as the 1851 census records Martha as having been born there. They had a son Elijah who was born in 1837/38 in Woodford according to the1851 census record but the birth is not recorded in the ONS index. The ONS index records the death of a John Wayman in the registration district of Stroud GLS in the December quarter of 1840. By the census of 1851, Martha (35) was in Thornbury GLS workhouse with Elijah (13) and two more children, Emma (5) and Alfred (1). Emma's birth certificate gives no father's name. Any information regarding John, Martha or Elijah is eagerly sought. Thanks. Chas in the UK "Charles Henry" <[email protected]>

There was a farm we called Newmans' farm right on the boarder between Downton and Redlynch. Downton, Wilts is only a mile or so from the next county Hants (where by the way there is a Downton too). I do not recognise the name P(i)ercy. Have you tried contacting the vicar of St. Lawrence's C.of E church or the Methodist or Baptist churches/chapels there?
