    3. This message is 10th and LAST of a series designed to clean up the subscriber list for this list. I hope that the list and newsgroup will be fixed soon. I realize I said the last message would come on Saturday. For you Digest recipients and those living in much of the world east of where I live, it may be Sunday. Sorry! Thanks for your patience. You who have been getting the messages are still subscribed. The people who have not gotten the messages because their email addresses have changed are no longer subscribed, or will be unsubscribed over the next few days. I still have work to do. I hope to be back before long with news of the revival of the groups. Thanks again for understanding. 3. This message is ninth of a series designed to clean up the subscriber list for this list. There will be one additional message in about 12 hours and then I'll leave you alone. Thanks for your patience. ============================================================= NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE ============================================================= SURNAMES-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.global) SURNAMES-BRITAIN-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.britain) SURNAMES-CANADA-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.canada) SURNAMES-GERMAN-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.german) SURNAMES-IRELAND-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.ireland) SURNAMES-USA-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.usa) SURNAMES-MISC-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.misc) ============================================================= The reason for these newsgroups is to allow posting newsgroup queries about surnames to a single place, keeping them out of the topic-oriented newsgroups. They are set up to get messages to sub-lists applying to specific countries or regions. The global list has all messages, but the others are region-specific. To learn about the formatting requirements for subject lines, see: http://www.rootsweb.com/~surnames/ These requirements may be amended as we bring back the newsgroups. We also plan to have a web form for sending messages, a form which will check the formatting and suggest corrections. Margaret Olson list manager

    3. This message is eigth of a series designed to clean up the subscriber list for this list. It is among the first steps in bringing the following mailing lists and newsgroups back to life. Don't expect messages for awhile, and don't try to send messages yet. We will tell you when you can do that. ============================================================= NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE ============================================================= SURNAMES-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.global) SURNAMES-BRITAIN-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.britain) SURNAMES-CANADA-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.canada) SURNAMES-GERMAN-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.german) SURNAMES-IRELAND-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.ireland) SURNAMES-USA-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.usa) SURNAMES-MISC-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.misc) ============================================================= Currently these messages are going only to mailing list subscribers because the automoderation routine is not yet in place. Once the mailing lists are again connected to the newsgroups, I will remove the [S-brit] or [S-global] or other list identifiers from the subject lines. I will also remove the informational taglines at the ends of the messages which instruct on how to unsubscribe. I realize that many mailing list readers like to have the list identifier in the subject line as a way to sort messages, but these lists have gateways to Usenet newsgroups, and there are almost certainly many more people reading the messages on the newsgroup side of the gateways than are getting them in the mailing lists, and those people would be confused and misinformed by the ID and instructions, so they will be removed. Not yet, though - they help the list manager more than they help you right now. Margaret Olson list manager

    3. This message is seventh in a series of 12 or so messages designed to clean up the subscriber list for this list. I'll stop sending them on or before Saturday morning, August 23. ============================================================= NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE ============================================================= SURNAMES-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.global) SURNAMES-BRITAIN-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.britain) SURNAMES-CANADA-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.canada) SURNAMES-GERMAN-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.german) SURNAMES-IRELAND-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.ireland) SURNAMES-USA-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.usa) SURNAMES-MISC-L (soc.genealogy.surnames.misc) ============================================================= There were nearly 12,000 addresses subscribed to the 21 different lists. Already more than 1000 addresses have been removed, either automatically by bouncing more than three messages or because subscribers decided they didn't want to be on a list. A lot of you forgot you were even here. Many messages bounced because they are to accounts which no longer exist. After 3 bounces the mailing list software at RootsWeb automatically unsubscribes addresses, so I need to send enough messages for 3 or 4 digests to go out in order to clear out the deadwood. I've gotten a LOT of email since I started this, but better now than later when real messages start to come through. I prefer to tell people who have forgotten about the Usenet newsgroup connection now, rather than fielding questions and complaints later. Usenet is a different world which connects to a lot of people who do not subscribe to mailing lists. Back in the good old days when the lists/newsgroups started we'd get 30 or 40 messages a day - or more - to the busiest lists/newsgroups. I hope that - and more - return. We considered just emptying the subscriber lists and telling people to resubscribe later, but decided against that for assorted reasons (such is how to define "later"). Anyhow, I'll stop on Saturday (or before). It will end - I promise. Margaret Olson list manager

    2. Christine
    3. DONOGHUE, Daniel / MCCARTHY, Ellen; IRL >TAS,AUS; 1849-1853 Name mystery? Why? Dear List I am badly need some advice. Daniel (aka DONALD ) DONOHUE & variations) was tried and deported from County Waterford in 1849 for stealing a donkey. Four years later, in 1853, his pregnant wife (how? who?), Mary Anne and Daniel's son John, arrived in Tas, Australia as bounty immigrants. Baby Ellen was born on the ship in 1853 and when it docked Daniel immediately adopted baby Ellen and registered her name as DONOHUE (var. spellings) and raised her as his own daughter. On Ellen's birth registration form Mary Anne's maiden name is not clear but appears to be VOLLYAN maybe VELLIGAN. ( This name does not sound Irish, has anyone heard of it ?) Ellen married at age 16 and gave her maiden name as McCARTHY, yet on all the birth certificates for her 16 children she gives her name as DONOGHUE. However elderly cousins tell me that their grandmother always claimed to be Ellen McCARTHY. So why the McCARTHY? If McCARTHY was the real father then one would think that given that they were very conservative Catholics they would not want to be reminded of this. Also Daniel seemed to be very accepting of this indiscretion. Could Mary-Ann have been a cousin, or one of Daniel's sisters rather than his original wife? Could she have been sent out to Daniel to save the family from shame? Or was Daniel some counter revolutionary or arch-criminal whose real surname was McCarthy? We have talked about it a lot here and simply do not have a clue. I would greatly appreciate the views of some experienced researches. regards Christine Christine <bates2@ozemail.com.au>
