Dear Cheryl, I am also very new to this and to be honest many of my connections in England I have scrounged off others in my family. One very useful newsgroup is the soc.genealogy.britain and the soc.genealogy.britain.surnames and posting a message asking about "The Downs" and your family's surname on the Downs. Once you know which County the Downs are in you can go to your local Church of the Latter Day Saints Research Centre (no you don't have to be a Mormon) or Family History Society or State Library and look at records such as the births, deaths and marriages for that County. Also Censuses taken for the years she may have been resident will put you on to other relatives. The anzwers search engine at anzwers.com.au is really good for looking for Australian records and for addresses of local Family History Societies (I just visited one for the first time last week and it was very helpful) I will also forward a message I was sent recently when I asked a similar question to someone who helped me. Hope this has been of some use From a fellow beginner Jan Fizzell AnthSullivan@bipond.com ---------- > From: Cheryl Kerr <ckerr@midcoast.com.au> > To: SURNAME-QUERY-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: FIZZELL,John and Bridget;Liverpool,ENG;1830's > Date: Monday, 16 March 1998 20:31 > > Hi-I regret I can't help with your particular search, but am wondering if > you would share with me how you went about making the track back.
