    3. ************************************************************* (PLEASE READ THIS LIST'S DESCRIPTION AFTER THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW. ALSO READ THE LISTOWNER'S NOTES ABOUT WHAT IS ALLOWED ON THIS LIST AND ACCEPTED RULES OF BEHAVIOR.) ************************************************************* Welcome to the SURNAME-QUERY-L mailing list! You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to SURNAME-QUERY as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below. 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to SURNAME-QUERY-L-request@rootsweb.com That contains (in the body of the message) the command: unsubscribe And NO additional text. Not your name, not your email address, no signature element. JUST THAT ONE WORD !!!!! 2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to: SURNAME-QUERY-L-request@rootsweb.com. 3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are com- bined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to: SURNAME-QUERY-L-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to: SURNAME-QUERY-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving digests. 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to: SURNAME-QUERY-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both. For your verification, a transcript of the original sub- scription request is included at the end of this Welcome Message. *****READ THIS*****READ THIS*****READ THIS***** SURNAME-QUERY-L: This List is a place for users to send queries on specific SURNAME searches. It is also a place where anyone, who is able to help a researcher, to post that help. If you see a query and are able to provide some data, please post it back to the List for all users to see. If you send it privately only to the one who sent the query, you are helping only one person. If you post it here, you are potentially helping many. Where a List already exists for a surname a user sends in, subscribers will let the user know the name of the List, how to subscribe, etc. For surnames for which a List doesn't exist, we will encourage all subscribers to help out if they have pertinent information. If you want to conduct a search yourself for a particular SURNAME List, you may log on to John Fuller's "Genealogy Resources on the Internet". John accesses all the servers where there are genealogy links and keeps an up-to-date searchable database for Lists covering SURNAMES, States, Regions, Areas, Foreign Countries, Ethnic Groups, Nationalities, Counties, etc. Here is the URL to use to log on to his site: http://users.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html *****READ THIS !!!!!***** SUBJECT LINES: PLEASE, DO NOT make such subject lines such as: "My Surnames", "My Lines", "Searching for Surnames", "Please Help", "Need Info", etc., etc. Most folks on the Net have limited time and don't have the time to read every post that is downloaded from the Lists to which they subscribe. Therefore, they open ONLY those that show promise of information on the SURNAMES they are researching. IF YOU TYPE A "GENERIC" SUBJECT LINE, THE CHANCES ARE YOU WILL GET VERY FEW RESPONSES. Make the Subject line meaningful, e.g., BROWN, Charles; 1740-1813; England>PA>KY MUNSEY Family; 1795-1852; NY>PA>GA In other words, give the name as completely as possible; give the known dates; and finally, give the locations to show, if known, country of origin, place arrived in America, and migration of family members to other states. Users get tired of seeing email from people who won't take the time to type a meaningful subject line. If posters don't think it important enough to let us know whom they are seeking, then why should they expect answers? Keep your queries confined to few enough names to get them all in the subject line. And, please, type the SURNAMES in ALL CAPS. It makes it easy to see at a glance what they are, and it sure is a lot easier to pick them out of the body text. **********(NO OFF-TOPIC POSTS ALLOWED !!!!!)********** No other subjects will be allowed on this List. It is for use by researchers to make contact with other researchers who happen to be researching the same SURNAME, BRANCH, LINE, STATE, etc. For general research information on WHERE and HOW to locate genealogical data, please subscribe to the RESEARCH-HOWTO-L List. You may also ask questions on the RESEARCH-HOWTO-L List about how to use your com- puter for general or specific genealogy purposes, in- cluding word processing principles and techniques. For discussing Genealogy Trivia; Nostalgia; "Americana"; "Old-Timey" subjects; Ghost Tales; Recipes; Traditional Home and Garden Tips; Poems; Family Traditions, Anecdotes, Tales, etc., please subscribe to the HOMESPUN-L List. Some Things About RootsWeb: The mail server software at RootsWeb is programmed to automatically remove a user after messages to that user are "bounced" 4 times. What this means is that if your mailbox gets full, and your server will not accept messages from this List, "bouncing" them back to SURNAME-QUERY-L, RootsWeb will remove you from the subscription list. If this happens, you merely have to resubscribe to get back on the List. From time to time your ISP (server) may have problems which prevent it from accepting any messages. If this happens, mail will also be "bounced" back to RootsWeb and you will be removed after 4 bounces. There will be no "chit-chat" on this List. NONE !!!!! If you have personal things to say to someone, send them privately to that person's email address. Do not send messages that are of absolutely no value, e.g. "I agree", "Way to go", "Saw your signature element; which SMITH line are you researching", "Where in Dallas do you live", "Do you know Jim Bob Brown in Dallas", etc. These are replies that MUST be sent privately, NOT back to this List. If someone posts an off-topic message, DO NOT reply to it or make reference to it on the List. Do it PRIVATELY !!!!! We DO, however, want you to reply to the List when helping out someone and the information could be of use to others on the List. There will be no profanity in messages to this List. There will be no "flames". We hope no one sees a need to "flame", but if that occasion ever arises, DO NOT send to this List; send privately to the recipient's email address. We hope no one is upset with the Rules above, but if anyone is, he/she is free to unsubscribe and let the rest of us get on with helping others. We want the List to be helpful, informative, and fun to use. We believe that in order to make it work the best, it must be a structured, monitored, and disciplined List. If anyone has any ideas about how we can make the List better, don't hesitate to send in your suggestions to the List. We can discuss them here.
