    1. SURNAMES--- GRECO & MAURO
    2. R.
    3. can anybody help me with these names? both families came through ellis island in the late 1800's. i am just starting this search so i don't have anything else to say yet. i have heard, though, that the name MAURO may have been changed from something more difficult to read and write. i have learned that at ellis island, to make things easier for the new comers, they often changed the spelling of names. and sometimes it was because when the name was spoken, say by an italian to an intake worker at ellis who may have been german, french or any one who was willing to work for the day, the name was written as closely as it could be to what it sounded like. often names were completely slaughtered, altered and changed, and once they were put on paper, it was, as they say, HISTORY. everyone they handed that paper to, called them by their new name and most immigrants didn't know how to hop the language barrier to reclaim their names. my grandfather told me he knew lots of folks who were very unhappy about the fact that they came to america to lose their family history because no one cared to keep it straight. r.

    1. BURMAN: OH/PA/IA?
    2. C LN Holly
    3. Looking for info on Eva BURMAN, born around 1838 in OH (acc. to 1880 census for Henry Co., OH); acc. to this census, her father was born in PA and her mother in OH. There's a possibility that the census is wrong and that she was born in IA. Eva married John QUILLMAN (son of ? QUILLMAN and Anna ?, both born in Germany) and their first son, Ulysses Franklin (Frank) was born 1868 in IA. (That is why I suspect maybe Eva was born there too, as the same census lists Frank's place of birth as OH while his death cert. and obit. list IA). His family (including his uncle David QUILLMAN and his grandmother Anna) moved to Henry Co., OH when Frank was 2 years old and settled in Monroe Twp. where they were farmers. Does anyone have anything at all about Eva or other BURMAN families in PA, OH, or IA that might give me a lead on this line? I'd appreciate any bit of help I could get. Thanks very much for your time, Cassie Port Orford, OR clnholly@aol.com

    2. Carlabrad
    3. Emily, Hi there I am a LaGrone from Texas and I don't think you will be able to find a birth certif. for Jimerson Marvin LaGrone because the state didn't require them until about 1900. The next best thing is to look for his death certif. It may list his parent's and his place of birth. Hope you have good luck.
