    3. Very Good Suggestion! Until two weeks ago, I did not know HOW to enter an email address without clicking on it. We older newbies got on these lists to find more of our family. We have a lot of time to spend doing it usually. But a lot of people don't and are just as anxious to find THEIR families. We older ones sometimes buy computers for that purpose and to write to the grandkids somewhere. I personally am new to genealogy and newer to computers--about 2 months. 3. Very Good Point!! I often wait for an answer to something and then never see it because of the strict rules. Usually if it is really important to me, I will email the person with the question, begging for them to forward me the answers they receive. But if they are as busy as I am, sometimes I never hear from them. It would be so much easier if we could all see the answers and then make the decision as to whether we want to read it or not. 1. Re: PLEASE READ !!!!! IMPORTANT !!!!! FROM THE LISTOWNER
    2. Could not agree more. Most of the leads I have found on lists have been from reading "replies". If someone asks "does anyone know where I can find information on ....?" That doesn't give me any information except that information is needed. If, on the other hand, the query is responded to with a source for the information. Then that is helpful. Karima R Curtis wrote: > > The answers are the key....I can understand not getting into a dialogue and continuous > lengthy discussion, but everyone should see all of the initial reply. 1. Re: PLEASE READ !!!!! IMPORTANT !!!!! FROM THE LISTOWNER
    2. SURNAME-QUERY List Owner
    3. Mart, I should have been clearer. Several users are "talking" back and forth with email that contains absolutely nothing useful for the other users. Let me give an example. User A sends a query about Isaac SMITH of VA in 1850. User B replies, "I have info on that person. Con- tact me and tell me what you need." User A replies, "I need to know who his second wife was, and the names of the children from that marriage." User B says, "I have the data in Word format. It is 78 pages long. Do you want it?" User A says, "Yes, please send it to me." User B sends back an email TO THE LIST with what is supposed to be an attachment, but the file data is included in the body of the email, making it almost 1 Mb in size. The first query was perfectly acceptable. The 5 emails that follow could have been sent to the users' personal email addresses, especially the last one. At RootsWeb attachments to email are forbidden, even if they are "true" attachments. An attachment that ends up as body text of an email causes the email to be larger than the acceptable size on the List. All of us are adult intelligent humans. A little brain exercise will tell us when our emails are beneficial to the entire group or to just one individual. Replies to an offer for lookups are NOT beneficial to the group. Answers to such requests are NOT beneficial to the group. I did not intend to stifle meaningful discourse, just tried to cut down on the "fluff". The intent of the List is that it is a place where contacts may be made; contacts which may, in most cases, be carried on better via private email. On specific surname Lists, yes, answers and follow up correspondence is encouraged; on a List such as this one with so many users, without some restrictions it would soon become so cluttered that it would lose its purpose. Hope this explains. SgtGeorge At 07:23 AM 9/7/98 +0100, mararm wrote: >I thought this list was for information. I for one look forward to seeing >the answers in case I could use them. 3. "I thought this list was for information. I for one look forward to seeing the answers in case I could use them. Why do I have to just read questions. Mart" Dear Mart, This list IS for information, and mostly what SgtGeorge is talking about is messages like this one which accomplish practically nothing, genealogically. The only reason I posted it back to the list is to help others understand the same. Normally, I would have replied to your letter off-list. "Please do this look-up for me", etc. can be better handled off the list, as it helps nobody but the writer himself. There are many others I am sure you can see, too. Hope this helps you understand. 1. Re: Research Strategy
    2. Renee' LaViness
    3. These were some wonderful ideas. I have spent the summer meeting family I never knew and "scraping their brains". I would like to add a couple more ideas, as these are some I have found helpful, through working with my grandma (who has Alzheimers' (sp?) disease) and others who don't. These tidbits of info can also be helpful if found out: Who owned the land they lived on? What years or timeperiods did they move in ? (Get a time-line built) What schools did they attend? Did they go to school with any cousins? What churches they attend, or what denomination were they? Did they have any special skills - such as making quilts, wagonwheels, etc? Were they often quarrelsome? (This helps in finding out if there might be lawsuits from or against them). You could also ask if they knew of any lawsuits concerning the persons you are discussing. If someone doesn't remember when someone was born, and won't even attempt a guess, try asking what they remember of their lives at the time the other was born. Try to help them help you. After you get some ideas, ask them how old they were when that happened, so you will have an idea what date/time frame to look at. Old newspapers can also hold a lot more info than many legal documents (they can bring a person to life for you), so finding a timeline and adding as many things to look for can be extremely helpful. Just some things to think on................
