To those special people for whom rules never seem to apply: Please enjoy yourself as you drive your car on the opposite side of the road. And, though everyone else stops for the RED traffic light, you may, please, feel free to be the exception and consider the light change from GREEN to RED to mean GO! Rules are established to allow the most people to receive the most advantage from a common resource. In this case it's not only the inapplicable information and wasted bandwidth on the internet that is undesireable, but there is a major storage problem, too. Every message, no matter how pertinent or useless is stored in archives for ALL to research later. This storage costs money to maintain and/or to edit for content. If the information is not of value to the list the storage space and time to search the old messages is wasted. So, the result is that you consume resources (the time of others) with your egocentric selfishness that could be MUCH MORE effectively used by those who are truly interested in genelogical research-YOURS included. This is only my 3rd posting to this list since I joined months ago, and even though my own research has not made much headway here, I still enjoy the questions and comments relating to the list's common purpose. Those of you who complain about having to follow rules would probably feel free to gallop your horse through my vegetable garden, too. Well, perhaps, I might feel just as free to fire a shotgun at you as you do so. If it is so difficult for you to have consideration for the needs and courtesies of others please feel free to drop off the list and permit those who care to get on with their own work. You should be ashamed of yourselves for such juvenile behavior. Again, my appologies to the list and list owner. No response is needed or desired. Thankyou Joe Somhorst

If I want RULES I would read ROBERT, not this list. You are obnoxious and controlling. All the lists I belong to are user friendly not moderator ruling. What are all these rules for? We are here for genealogy not for your big mouth. Can't you be friendly and helpful instead of pompous? If your cr_p continues I will sign off. Doesn't it bother you that so many people are unhappy with your domination of this list? Well, it should I stand with those that are unhappy with you and your rules.

    3. I am confused about how to get a given article from the surname list. I thought that the instructions said to reply to "SURNAME-I-request" and type in the body of the letter on the words "get message /28179". But apparently I am wrong. I have tried several times to get the message # 28179 on the Carr surname. But, I get responses saying that the records are private and not available. So, I typed a message to another address...I think it was SURNAME-L-request. I get a message saying that I am not doing this right. PLEASE HELP ME. I just don't understand the different addresses and list instructions. I simply want to read the article posted last week (?) about the Carr Surname. I think it was #28179. Thanks for your help. 3. Hi everyone, I need some information regarding the Benicia Arsenal that operated in California from 1851-1964. The civilian employee was my aunt Lela May (CAMPBELL) SCOTTI, who had changed her name to Dolores Lela. (My aunt's husband was Charles "Eddie SCOTTI.) She lived in Concord, CA and was killed in an auto/pedestrian accident, just a few steps from her home, as she was on her way to work at the Benicia Arsenal. I need to see if employment records for my aunt are available and where I can write for them. I was given the following as a possible contact: Mr. Paul Dempsey, Office of Economic Adjustment, Office of the Assistant Sec. of Defense Force, Management and Personnel, The Pentagon, Washington, D.C. But, my letter came back insufficient address, and or addressee unknown, and it wasn't even opened. I tried to access the address for the Arsenal but couldn't connect: http://www.ci.benicia.ca.us/ Is there anyone out there with information about where I can get this info? 2. I thought i would put this out again to see if i can get some HELP. I'm at a loss right now and need someone to tell where to go with this family. This is the information i have. My question will be at the end of this story. JAMES C. SULLIVAN was born in 3-27-1836 in Tipperery County, Ireland ( possible the town of Connell) His Father was JERRY SULLIVAN and his Mother was JULIA SULLIVAN. His mother died when he was 10 years of age and he was sent to live with his AUNT CATHERINE CONNELLY nearby Connell, Ireland. At the age of 15 or so he came to the US either with the US Artillery or by ship He came to New York City and lived there until he joined the service at West Point. He enlisted in Company D. 5th U.S.Artillery. He was married in 1864 to a MARY SULLIVAN in Wash.D.C. in 1864. I know they had at least one child , named Julia. He left his family due to heath resons and went to New Orleans,La around 1866? >From here I show he remarried a KATE SHEA in INDIANOLA,Texas haveing children with her. I don't know anything on this family. Sometime later James left with another wife named MARY ANN BURNS. She was a step-daughter to Elizabeth Shea. I don't know if this is a sister or mother to Kate Shea. James went back to New Orleans with Mary Ann Burns, then they traveled to Calif, Oregon. Here in Dixie and Portland, Oregon they had two children. Margaret who died in 1882 ( about 18 months old) and May who was born 1882 >From there the family travels all over Western Montana. They have several more children, Margarutie, b-1885 She married a George Milliron Julia b-1886 in Dell, Mt she married a Harvey Corn Katherine b-1888 in Evaro Mt she married a William Hadcock Helen,b-1890 in Basin, Mt she married a Grover Kelly James b- 1892 died a birth Thos Owen b-1893 in Helena James b-1898 in Helena died before he was 12 years old Question is where can i go to get the info on Jerry and Julia Sullivan? I've written to Ireland with no help. How can i get information on his aunt Catherine Connelly? Thanks for reading this and thanks for any comment that could help me get going Vicki [email protected]

You will miss a lot - good luck in your research - I had a hit on five lines last night that I might not have ever have found if it hadn't been for the list.

    3. Dear members, I would like to straighten out a few things about this list and the Sgt. I sent a letter privately to Sgt George. Some one decide they wanted to put it on the mailing list. This is the question that I asked. " I thought his list was for information. I for one look forward to seeing the answers, in case I could use them. Why do I have to just read questions. Mart. This is the answer I got on the mailing list. Dear Mart, This list IS information, and mostly what Sgt. George is talking about is messages like this one which accomplish practically nothing, genealogically. The ONLY reason" I" Posted it Back to the list is to help others understand the same. ________________Normally, I would have replied to your letter off the list. This is the private letter that I got from SGT George. Mart I should have been clearer. Several users are "talking back and forth with the email that contains absolutely nothing useful for the other users. All of us are adult intelligent humans. A little brain exercise will tell us when our emails are beneficial to the entire group or to just one individual. Replies to an offer for lookups are not beneficial to the group. I did not intend to strife meaningful discourse, Just tried to cut down the fluff. In defense of Sgt. George , whom I don't know . He did nothing wrong someone else did, by sending my private letter to the list. Also Sgt George is not on the air as he is on vacation. I hope this clears things up and you all stay with the list. Thanks for listening MART

    3. G'day All Fellow Surname Researchers Here are a few suggestions I think it behoves all of us to use for accuracy's sake and to give other people some idea of who we are and where we live - 1. I believe that there is nothing wrong with a good old-fashioned "Hello," "G'day" and the use of person's Christian/Given name to start off; 2. standard practice in ANY group of genealogists is to put the surname in CAPITALS (and some people then prefer to place Christian/Given names after the surname like in Army rolls/ school class rolls/official records); 3. sign off mail with full name, city, state and country of residence (abbreviations are tricky because "WA" in the USA means "Washington State" but in Australia it is the abbreviation for the State of "Western Australia"). So many countries also have settlements with the same name as settlements in other countries; 4. unless you work for the Australian CIB, American FBI, British MI5 or Interpol and have a REAL need for privacy PLEASE put your e-mail address on the bottom (the crooks will get you anyhow if they want!!!!!!!) Also remember that Continental North American addresses usually do NOT have extensions like "uk," "au" on them) AND considering that most of the mail emanates from Continental North America the rest of us can only guess where you live; I believe that we all love receiving notes from people in parts of the world we are not familiar with, and that most of the people on these lists are more than willing to help out fellow researchers. However, confusion will reign unless we adopt some sort of group standard. What's more I learn heaps by reading some of each letter posted because you folks really are, collectively, a remarkable "font of knowledge." When answering I select "Reply to Author" in most cases my reply pertains to them only. Otherwise I happily share my knowledge with the rest of you researchers. The very best in your surname research - may you have as much success in finding my current-day PARKERs in Lancashire, UK. They were as excited about "finding" us in the Land of the Kangaroo as we were about finding them back in the "old country!" If you have UNCOMMON surnames I am more than happy to check my Australian White Pages 1996-7 CD for you (but I can't cut and paste names and details of them from my CD). If there are only a few names and you want to snail mail to possible Australian relatives then I will type them out and e-mail them to you. Alternatively access our Oz (= Australian) White Pages on URL http://www. whitepages.com.au A.
