Putterbaugh is an americanized corruption of the German Butterbach (butter brook) "The person who lived by a stream or brook among the butternut trees". The Butternut tree, also known as the White Walnut or Oil nut grows rapidly on well-drained soils of hillsides and stream banks. The sweet nut is eaten by Man and also Blue Jays, Red squirrels, and chipmunks. The Butternut is a very exotic looking tree, with large compound leaves made up to 11-17 leaflets. In spring the trees produce small purple flowers. Americanized German Names is a fascinating subject and can easily be researched in libraries and the internet.
