NUTT (English) From Middle English "not(e), nut" (nut) (Old English "hnutu"; either an occupational name for a gatherer and seller of nuts, or nickname for a man supposedly resembling a nut (i.e., having a rounded head and dark complexion). ---Source: A Dictionary of Surnames by Patrick Hanks and Flavia Hodges. also: NUTT, NUTE (English) Descendant of "NUTE", a pet form of CANUTE or KNUT (hill; white-haired). ---Source: New Dictionary of American Family Names by Elsdon C.
