Dear Sergeners (Suginors, etc.): This is my first time using your list, and I really need some help! For years, I have been trying to figure out where my ancestor and founder of Surgoinesville, TN (Hawkins County), came from. All we really know is that he went by the title Major James Surguine (we've checked every military record we can think of-- but we're not really sophisticated at this), he started purchasing land in Hawkins County about 1804, co-founded the town of Surgoinesville in 1815 -- and that's about it. Prior to that, we really don't know anything. I've looked everywhere for an earlier "Surguine" or "Surgoine" with no success and, because of the concentration of Surgener's (etc.) in that part of the country at about that time, can only guess that he simply followed the family tradition of changing the spelling to suit himself. Therefore, any offspring of your Surgeners, Surginors, etc. named "James" that suddenly disappears from your family records at about that time (late 1700s, early 1800s) would be suspect. ANY clues will be MOST appreciated! Thank you. Sincerely, -- Skip Surguine Indianapolis
