    3. I would have thought you had this information from cousin Melanie. John and Sarah Sojourner had the following children: Hardy b. 12-8-1777, d. 4-1-1845 m. Missouri Thomas 1824 Adams co. Ellen m. Richard Swayze 1830 Adams co. Mary Katherine b. 2-2-1792 (Ireland?), d. 8-2-1858 m. Reuben Cassels bef. 1818 Elizabeth b. 1795 Crab Orchard, Lincoln county, KY m. George Dougherty John moved to LA and disappears Lewis moved to LA and disappears My information came from a cousin, Dorothy Case Lewis. She owns a couple of books produced by the Descendants of the Jersey Settlers of Adams county, MS. Their web site is: www.djs.org and I am their new webmaster. Dorothy Sojourner, a cousin in MS, runs the family plantation as a bed and breakfast now. I do not know who was the original researcher on the Sojourner lines, but most of the data is in the books they published. I don't have a copy myself, and none are currently available. I had always heard that Elizabeth was born in Crab Orchard, KY, but I found that a bit odd since they were supposed to have come into MS with the Swayze's and the King's and the Corey's. I am not that familiar with all of the families. This was a migration with the Rev. Samuel Swayze as what I see as the head of the group, I suppose. What is funny is that my King's are not a part of the Kings who migrated down to MS with the Swayze's, but they did migrate down into MS from TN. I am still trying to get their route set in my mind. KY always threw me off. I guess I've found my proof that they were there. John's mother, Mrs. LaJournier, came to SC 1740-1750's from France. She had 3 sons and a daughter in tow. The daughter has never been named or found. I had, at one time, thought her to be an Olive Sojourner who married a Mr. Pope, but I found out that I was wrong. Oh well. I will keep looking for her. The book names Hardy as the first child of John and Sarah Sojourner. I have yet to discover where they married. Hardy is listed in census records as having been born in SC, and anyone who has ever looked for SC documents knows how hard they are to find. I show that Hardy married only once, and there is no Hardy Jr., but they did name a son Absolom Hardy b. 1833. Hardy is well documented for having lived in the Oakwood Plantation that is now ran by Dorothy Sojourner. http://www.bestinns.net/usa/ms/oakwood.html I am sure that Dorothy has a ton of documents which probably came with the plantation. I haven't talked to her myself yet. His obituary was listed in the Mississippi Free Trader published in Natchez, MS. My source is my copy of the book, "Marriages and Deaths from Mississippi Newspapers Volume 2: 1801 - 1850 compiled by Betty Couch Wiltshire. His estate was listed in the 1850 Slave Schedule. He died April 1st, 1845. He was a brickmason and a planter according to census records. By the way, William Sojourner is probably Hardy's son b. 1831. Question: Was Hardy Sojourner married twice? Or was there a Sr. and a Jr.? If Hardy was in KY 1800 (Tina found) and was old enough to be head of household, and he is taxed in MS in 1818 .... but he marries 1824 which would make him in his 40's at his first marriage .... Not unheard of, but I'm curious. Tina, where did you find the info that Hardy had a sister Elizabeth born in Crab Orchard, KY, 1794? I'm trying to keep these people and their documentation straight and no one has mentioned this before that I can recall. Thanks for your help, Ruby

    2. Thank you very much, Tina. Interesting storry. This is the first I've gotten on this family of John/Sarah and names are new to me except for seeing the Swayze name along with Sojourner on the MS records (I only remember it because of Patrick Swayze - stop laughing everybody). Yes, Melanie has been very generous with sharing information and sending her work for the SURGENER webpages. What she has sent is on there but Melanie's focus wasn't on Hardy Sojourner at that time. I agree that Kentucky kind of throws you off, doesn't it? But William Sojourner could not have been born 1831 and be on the 1818 tax list. There's another Sojourner in the group. You've found proof Hardy was in KY, at least. It will be interesting to learn what his census looks like. I rechecked Early Kentucky Tax Records and went down all the lists for Lincoln Co. 1789 (the only one I have in print) but there was no entry similar to Sojourner. Olive Surgener, dau of Robert/Catherine, never has appeared as a Sojourner to my knowledge. At least I haven't seen the record, if so. Always exciting to find a new clue to work with! Hope it turns up something more for you. Ruby ............................... 3. Oh duh! Yes, you are right about the William. It couldn't possibly be his son in there. Probably someone else in the family, I'm sure. Not that I know who, but I will have to dig for that, won't I? I was very tired when I sent that in. Now I remember. Melanie's lines are through John's brother Fryer, via his son Gabriel. I think I was recalling mention of Oakwood Plantation. I don't know. Like I said, I was tired when I wrote last night. <grin> Do forgive my mistake. When I came across the data on Olive, I was looking for other spelling versions of Sojourner. You never know when a census taker or someone else may have spelled a name phonetically, or just plain misspelled it. 2. Tina, According to Hardy Sojourner's Bible (or least as transcribed in print), his son was named John Lewis Sojourner - instead of there being two sons: John and Lewis. (http://home.rmci.net/adamewa/oakgrove.htm) Is that wrong? Ruby .........................
