Ah me, this one seems rather rare. It may also be a variant of Sojourner. I find John Sudgner in a headright list submitted by Theodorick Bland in Charles City Co., VA, at the county court of 4 June 1663. This was for 3,550 acres. You probably know that by this time headrights were bought and sold, so this man's passage was not necessarily paid by Bland. Besides, there is nothing to show he has any connection to your Rowland of thirty years before. (Beveley Fleet, Virginia Colonial Abstracts, (Baltimore, 1988) vol. III, p. 280, Charles City Co. Court Orders) There is a listing in the 1704 quit rents for John Sojourner with 240 acres in Isle of Wight Co. (Annie Laurie Wright Smith, The Quit Rents of Virginia, 1704 (Baltimore, 1977) 83) Swem's Historical Index lists Sojorner (Sojourner) Alice, 7W(1)237; John 29V228, 7W(1)237. These would be William & Mary Quarterly, first series, vol. 7, page 237 and Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, vol. 29, page 228. I don't have these handy, but they are in lots of libraries. I checked indexes of Nugent's Cavaliers and Pioneers, vols. 1 & 2, The Minutes of the Council of Virginia, The Journals of the House of Burgesses, Fleet's Virginia Colonial Abstracts, vols. 1 - 3, Torrence's Virginia Wills and Administrations, Swem's Historical Index, Noel Currer-Briggs, Virginia Settlers and English Adventurers, and all of Peter Coldham's series on immigrants covering the seventeenth century.
