    1. [SURGENER-L] More Scotland Records
    2. Finally got some more of the generous info from Claude Wrathall uploaded to SELECTED AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND, RECORDS at: http://home.rmci.net/adamewa/isles_2.htm or access it through the link at the bottom of the British Isles page. More to go. ---------- According to the counter on the "Bumper Sticker Genealogy" page, it has been visited over 280 times since it was uploaded on Thursday and probably a few more before I decided to put a counter on the page. Remarkable! The counter on the SURGENER home page indicates that many of those visitors have been accessing that webpage, too. While no one has contacted me about the name, somebody MIGHT remember seeing it if they ever come across the name somewhere. ---------- Also, found in "North Carolina Historical and Genealogical Register" April 1901, an excellent article about Rev. William Surginer with a number of sources cited. It is basically the same info contributed to the Chronological webpages by Billie Groening but goes further in telling about Surginer's missionaries' success in the inner coastal plain. About Surginer's personal background, the author says "...Surginer moved from Isle of Wight County, Va., to the area of Kehukee as a teenager in mid-1720's. He arrived with the family of an older kinsman, John Surginer, who was given a grant of 350 acres at Kehukee on 9 Apr 1725 for the importation of himself and five others. "Upon attaining his majority, William Surginer bought land for himself adjoining that of his kinsman; he made his first purchase at Kehukee in 1729." Ruby

    1. [SURGENER-L] New Page
    2. I've added a fun new page called "Bumper Sticker Genealogy" to the Surgener webpages: http://home.rmci.net/adamewa/ Click on the link. These are things I've collected for awhile and I used them in the State Gen. Society's quarterly when I was editor - had a great response, so thought others might get a smile or a chuckle, too. If you have any others, send them my way. Hope you like them!! Ruby

    1. [SURGENER-L] Scotland Chart
    2. Claude Wrathall has a more detailed Descendant Chart on the webpage at: http://home.rmci.net/adamewa/famgroup.htm Beginning with GEORGE SURGEONER born in Ireland and removing to Scotland. Please send your SURGENER charts for the webpage (no one living), censuses or anything else you might have made note of containing the name. Claude has sent much more which will be uploaded as soon as I get a chance, and Bill McNeese has recently contributed very interesting info for Hawkins Co., TN, as you've noted from the mail list. Darryl Pearce noted an emigration record from a Hotten source and I also found the entry in Coldham's book. This is getting more fascinating all the time! So many references, so little known. Hm-m-m-m. Hope all is well with everyone. HOT here today! Ruby

    3. Hi Ruby, Charity Surginer is listed in the 1830 census on page 55: 1 male <5 1 female 5-10 1 female 20-20 Patience Surgenor is in the 1840 census page 224: 1 male 10-15 1 female <5 (probably Mary) 1 female 10-15 1 female 30-40 (Patience) In the 1850 Census Page 350 the listing is for: Charity Surgioner age 45 (Head) Mary age 16 In the 1850 Census page 384B: Richard Smith 65 Patience 40 Joshua 10 Sarah 14 There is a Abraham Surginer who shows up in the 1850 census on page 338: Abraham age 25 Nancy age 18 Marriages : Jacob Surjoiner married Elizabeth Beesett Aug 19, 1839 (Page 7 -Hawkins Co. marriage records 1789- 1866). Patience Surgenor married Richard Smith Jan 23, 1845 (Page 17). (Since there are 25 Olly Surginer married John Still Jan 2, 1853 ( Page 40) Mary Elizabeth Sturgeon married Samuel Winger Oct 13, 1858 ( Page 59) Mason M.Surgener married Phoebe Palmer May 10, 1861 (Page 73) Mason M Surgener married Maria Fields Nov 16, 1861 ( Page 73) The curious thing is that in the 1830 and 1850 census Charity is listed in each census as being between Thomas Barnett and Benjamin Vaughn, and in the 1840 census Patience is listed in the same place, but Charity is not listed. They could have been sisters, but where is Patience in 1840 ? I wish I could find my Jerusha Surgener who married John Jones abt 1853 in this group. 1. [SURGENER-L] I'm back
    2. Good morning! Have been to Rowan Co. and Surry Co., North Carolina; Lee Co., Virginia; Knoxville, TN's historical collection (surprisingly not much but did have a number of publications for Hawkins Co., Tennessee, which I was pleased to see because I didn't have time to get to that county). Surgeners are still as mysterious after having been there in person! Did find a couple new items (to me) that I will get posted as soon as I get myself reorganized and back in sync. In the meantime, GOOD NEWS!! Notified by YAHOO (http://www.yahoo.com) that they've picked up our SURGENER webpage and added it to their search engine. Now if anybody is ever looking for the Surgener/Sojourner name (what are the odds of that?) and think to try searching under a different spelling, we'll get found!!! Currently we are also listed on the YAHOO "What's New" - at the YAHOO "search" blank, type in "Surgener" and you will see this entry: Arts: Humanities: History: Genealogy: Lineages and Surnames Surgener - U.S. and British Isles resources for the surname including the alternate spelling, Sojourner. Good for us!!! I haven't had time to read my emails yet and it will be a few days before I get caught up. Looking forward to reading your "stuff" ... Take care. Ruby

    2. I did get one of Claude Wrathall's descent charts uploaded. He also sent a more detailed chart so the one at: http://home.rmci.net/adamewa/famgroup.htm will probably be changed and updated when I return. See near bottom of webpage: "By Claude Wrathall - The is a following four-generation descendancy chart starting with a George Surgeoner who was born in Ireland (location unknown) but migrated to Ayrshire, Scotland before his marriage in 1819." 1. [SURGENER-L] NEW Scotland Records
    2. Thanks to mail list member, Claude Wrathall, the British Isles webpage has indexes of some birth, marriage, death records for Scotland. Check them out at: http://home.rmci.net/adamewa/isles.htm Claude has sent more records as well as desc. charts. I will try to get more up soon. A BIG thanks to Claude for this contribution to our SURGENER search. I will be leaving on Sunday for Knoxville, Tennessee; will return the following Sunday. My husband collects certain old fishing lures, reels, split-shot tins, etc., and the two largest fishing collection associations are having a combined show in Knoxville next. I was all for any excuse to get a trip to that area because I plan to spend some time looking for "dead people" (as my husband refers to my preoccupation with genealogy) in surrounding counties and possibly into VA and NC if I have time (with no freeway access to speed me along). You won't be hearing from me for awhile. Hope you will keep the mail list active while I'm gone and get your records together to share on the mail list AND the webpage! Take care, Ruby

    2. The following came from Darryl Pearce. It sounds like a possibility - everything is when it comes to the Surgener/Sojourner name! I don't know if it is in our gen. library but I will try to stop by today and see (if they're open). Does anybody else have access to this book? I found all the Surgener names in my research by starting at the top of the "S's" in the index and going all the way down to the end of the S's since I never knew how it was spelled. I even check "D" and "L" because you never know how someone will interpret the penmanship of the first letter. Thanks for the tip, Darryl!!! Ruby ---------- COPY --------- Received this from a Canadian Reseacher who's lineage starts in the Isle of Wight in the same time frame as the SURGENER's & name variants!! Oral tradition says she or her family came from Scotland, but this may be incorrect. She seems just to show up as John's wife in Hawkins Co., and is not in the 1850 census there.
