Dear Sergeners (Suginors, etc.): This is my first time using your list, and I really need some help! For years, I have been trying to figure out where my ancestor and founder of Surgoinesville, TN (Hawkins County), came from. All we really know is that he went by the title Major James Surguine (we've checked every military record we can think of-- but we're not really sophisticated at this), he started purchasing land in Hawkins County about 1804, co-founded the town of Surgoinesville in 1815 -- and that's about it. Prior to that, we really don't know anything. I've looked everywhere for an earlier "Surguine" or "Surgoine" with no success and, because of the concentration of Surgener's (etc.) in that part of the country at about that time, can only guess that he simply followed the family tradition of changing the spelling to suit himself. Therefore, any offspring of your Surgeners, Surginors, etc. named "James" that suddenly disappears from your family records at about that time (late 1700s, early 1800s) would be suspect. ANY clues will be MOST appreciated! Thank you. Sincerely, -- Skip Surguine Indianapolis

Hello, My line is with Robert Surginer d.1778. His son, John m. Mary Pope. Their daughter, Rebecca Surginer b.1781 d. 1823, Winnsboro, Fairfield Dist. SC. m. Samuel Johnston Ruby and I share the same line.(Different spelling) Billie of Texas
My earliest Surgener is my gr gr grandfather Stephen Samuel Surgener, born Jan 6, 1831, Hawkins Co. TN, died July 4, 1904, Blackwater, Lee Co., VA. Mar Elizabeth LIVESAY, 10 children. Also researching other Surgeners in the Lee Co. VA/Hawkins/Hancock Co. Tn** area, both for relationship to SSS and also for connections to other family lines--LIVESAY, TESTERMAN, ANDERSON, STAPLETON, BAKER, DAVIS (all established in the Lee/Hawkins/Hancock area by 1830). And because several of these lines migrated from Grayson Co. VA 1818-1830, the Surgener connections in the Grayson Co. VA/Ashe Co. NC area are also of special interest. **These are: Abraham R. Surgener, b Green Co. TN 1826, d Lee Co. VA 1895, mar Nancy ? 6 children Manson Surgener, b TN c 1839, d 1862, mar Maria FIELDS, 1 child Thomas Surgener, b Hawkins Co TN c 1842, mar Minerva HALL, res Scott Co VA 1865 Nancy Resch, Pennsylvania

Earliest SURGEONER ancestor is George Surgeoner, born about 1794 somewhere in Ireland. He migrated to Scotland early in his life and married Jean Tennock on 18 Apr 1819 in Saint Quivox, Ayrshire, Scotland where he spent the remainder of his life. He died on 28 Oct 1872 in Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland. Scotland death records for this period usually give the names of parents, but in George's case, his parents were not identified. I have been successful in identifying 206 of his descendants. Claude in Chicago
We haven't posted our lines for quite some time. To introduce ourselves to new people to the mail list, and to learn of their interest, we'll do a Roll Call. Everybody please post the people you are researching; they don't have to be direct lines and it doesn't matter how the name was spelled - there were many variations. My Surgener line begins with a 7th great grandmother: OLIVE SURGENER [Pope Dickson] (ca 1745-1820) > ROBERT SURGENER (____-1778) > JOHN SURGENER (____-1728) Ruby of Idaho
I am forwarding this to the mail list for Steve <[email protected]> - contact him at this email address or via the SURGENER mail list so we can all learn something! Can someone recommend a source that enumerates the ships that departed Ireland for Canada (Quebec) in the early part of the 1925 - 1935? I have seen ship logs, but they are all for the 1800s, and I need a listing for the early 1900s. The ship I am looking for in particular is the Duchess of York. Has anyone ever heard of this ship? Does anyone know what steamship line it may have been associated with - for example Cunard, etc. Thank you all for any insights. Happy New Year! Steve
