    2. >> The Census Taker >> >> It was the first day of census, and all through the land; >> The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. >> He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; >> His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. >> A long winding ride down a road barely there; >> Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. >> The woman was tired, with lines on her face; >> And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. >> She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; >> And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. >> He asked of her children... Yes, she had quite a few; >> The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. >> She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; >> his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. >> She noted each person who lived there with pride; >> And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. >> He noted the sex, the color, the age... >> The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. >> At the number of children, she nodded her head; >> And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. >> The places of birth she "never forgot"; >> Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? >> They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; >> But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. >> They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; >> They could read some .and write some .. though really not much. >> When the questions were answered, his job there was done; >> So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. >> We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear; >> "May God bless you all for another ten years." >> Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me; >> As we search for the people on our family tree. >> We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; >> As we search for that entry from long, long ago. >> Could they only imagine on that long ago day; >> That the entries they made would effect us this way? >> If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; >> And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. >> We can hear if we listen the words they impart; >> Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. >> >> Author Unknown >> >> >> > > >

    1. [SURGENER-L] Updated Surgeoner web listing
    2. Hi all I have updated my web listing exporting my database on Surgeoners and variants. My research in Ireland is made much easier if people keep me informed of known emigrations and deaths elsewhere in the world of people whose birth possibly appears on my list. (it stops me having to wonder so much which William Surgenor a particular death might refer to) so I would welcome any information from others. The web site is at http://vzone.virgin.net/jackson.eagleson/surgenor/index.htm Regards Jackson

    1. [SURGENER-L] LDS Church Web Site
    2. This is FYI - one of the best explanations of the LDS site records I've seen yet. However, if you do a Customized Search by surname, it will pull up a list of books housed at Salt Lake that includes the surname. Again, as you know, take everything with a grain of salt until you've proven it for yourself step-by-step. Just because it's in print, doesn't mean it's right. If something includes documented sources, it's a better bet than most and at least you have a starting point to check for yourselves. Enjoy! 2. Hi! Not sure if this is new or not as I've not been on but a short time. Found this will at archives in NC on my last trip. I'm not to good at reading the writing, but this is the best I could do. Jane IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN I Robert Surginer of Edgecomb County in the Province of North Carolina being weak of body but of perfect and sound Memory do think proper at this time to settle any worldly affairs, For which purpose I make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, Revoking all other Wills formally by me made or caused to be made, But do acknowledge and affirm this to be my last. I lend to my loving wife Catherine all my Land and plantation with all my stocks of Cattle, Horses, Sheep and Hogs, also all my Houshold furniture and Plantation. Utensils of every kind, During her Widowhood and no Longer; And at the Determination of her Said Widowhood it is my Will and Desire that my Son John Surginer shall have, Hold, Enjoy and (can’t read) all my said Land, Houshold furniture, Stocks of every kind for Himself and his Heirs forever. I give to my Son William Surginer One shilling (Can’t read) I give to my son Benjamin Surginer One shilling. I also give to each of my Daughters One Shilling Namely; Sarah Surginer, Olive Pope and Hannah Sikes.(?) Lastly I appoint my S. Son John Executor of this my last Will and Testament. 1. Re: [SURGENER-L] Re: Anything New?
    2. Thanks a LOT, Jane! There seems to be quite a bit of affiliation between the Surginers and Williamses in Edgecombe Co. I've always wondered if Catherine was a Williams but cannot find anything pointing towards a possible maiden name for her at all - at least not in what I have available. Really appreciate this. By the way, if there are new mail list subscribers who haven't seen the Surgener webpages, they are at: http://home.rmci.net/adamewa/index.htm I hope you find something of use to your search there! 1. [SURGENER-L] Re: Martha Jane SURGINER, b.May 1829, NC
    2. Martha Jane SURGINER born May 1829 in North Carolina ( 1900 Census)and died after 1900. (was living in 1900 Census) Martha Jane was married to Samuel Ferdinand STONE. All family records that I have are from the Richmond County, NC area. Death certificate of daughter, Elizabeth, lists her parents as Ferd STONE and Martha Jane SURGINER, both born in NC. I believe Martha Jane's parents to be John and Jane SURGINER, but have no real proof of this. Just going by supposition from census information. I do know that at one time there was a cemetery in Rockingham, North Carolina that was at one called the SURGINER Cemetery and had an Uncle that remembered visiting the site and there being a large SURGINERMarker in the middle. Today that cemetery is a wooded, overgrown lot in a residential area of Rockingham. I have visited the site and found evidence of sunken graves and the grave of one descendant marked by a funeral home marker. This person was buried in 1974. I have plans to visit another cemetery in the area that has at least one SURGINER buried there - Jno. SURGINOR, age 98 at death - no other information available on the death certificate. If I am correct about Martha Jane's parentage, then she had at least two siblings; Celia, born about 1831 and John, born about 1837. Would love to correspond with anyone having any information about these folks! Thanks!
