    3. Hi List Our SURGENOR Family History in Ireland tells that the Family were Huguenots (French Protestants) and first came to Ireland with King William III to Fight the Catholic King Charles II This is unproven! but it is funny how some stories are based on Fact. There is a good chance if true ,they were Members of one or more of the 3 French Foot Regiments (Infantry) or the 2 French Horse Regiments (Cavalry) Listed Below. Flintlocks were used however they were generally found in the form of handguns their mechanisms being more expensive. Only the Danish foot were completely fitted out with flintlocks. Pikes: 16 feet long with a heavy iron head. Used for repelling and carried with the musket. The pike was rare in Williams army. Swords Most were cheaply made and would break- the musket was used as a club. Bayonet Danish forces had adopted it but not the English Uniform: Williams army was better clothed but there was no standard uniform. Some uniforms almost matched those of the enemy creating confusion. A sprig of Green was worn to help identify Williams forces.

    1. [SURGENER] forum page
    2. Good Morning, A few weeks ago, Melanie posted to this list that she had requested a "SOJOURNER" genforum page be added to genealogylibrary.com's forums. It has been up and running for awhile and needs some activity as does this mail list if we're going to keep them going. http://genforum.genealogy.com/sojourner/ If you are searching your Sojourners, Surginers, Surgeners or whatever spelling, you must know enough to get yourself connected to them unless it is your immediate family name. We have had nothing new shared for adding to the SURGENER webpages for a long time. I had no response when I notified the mail list of the webpage being updated after the New Year. I have seen information and names we do not have posted to RootsWeb's new gedcom files (I do not have the URL right now) but not posted to this list or shared for the webpage. Please take the time to share your SURGENER research, family charts, anything at all, to add to the webpage to help all of us - and don't hesitate to post to SOJOURNER forum. Thanks, Ruby

That might help as well. I don't have any more new information, but if I do, will let you know. 1. [SURGENER] webpages update
    2. Well, I am in the process of updating the SURGENER webpages. I know, you probably thought I had crawled away and pulled the covers over my head, its been that long. I did! My new computer wants to crash my webpage files, so I still have to do them on the old one. So if you have anything you want to add, subtract, change, etc., now is the time to do it before I get out of the mood again!! Someone had asked me to put a link on the Sojourner page to her's, but I cannot find the URL now and I do apologize. If you will send that again, I'll do a better job this time. Hope you all have a good and succussful 2000!! Dig out those Surgeners by all spellings. There must be something more out there! Ruby

    2. I am not an FTM user nor do I use their CD's but some of you might and you might be interested in the following sent to me by several different people, most with differing opinions, FYI. Ruby ________________ -----copy----- Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter - Special Edition The following is a "news flash" that I thought would be of interest to many readers of the newsletter. I decided to send this out today rather than wait for the next regular edition of the newsletter. Broderbund is best known for Family Tree Maker, the most popular genealogy program in the world. They also produce more genealogy CD-ROM disks than any other company plus they have a popular Web site at GenealogyLibrary.com. Broderbund has been acquiring other companies, and then The Learning Company acquired them. A few weeks later, Mattel acquired The Learning Company. Now the Broderbund division is being spun off into a new company with major new funding from other companies as well. Notice the company names: A&E Networks (owners of The History Channel) along with Hearst Interactive Media and even NBC. This new partnership obviously will become a powerhouse in the genealogy business. I am enclosing the press release. I hope to write more about this in the next regularly scheduled newsletter. - Dick Eastman ============================================================ ==== A&E Television Networks, Hearst Interactive Media, Mattel, and Top Private Equity Firms Form Genealogy.com, LLC Proven Technology Leader in Genealogy Secures Nearly $38 Million in Funding With Backing From Major Media Corporations FREMONT, Calif., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- A&E Television Networks, Hearst Interactive Media, Mattel, Inc. (NYSE: MAT), Thomas H. Lee Partners and Weston Presidio Capital today announced a joint partnership to back a newly formed company called Genealogy.com, LLC. Formerly the Broderbund genealogy unit of Mattel, Genealogy.com received $37.5 million in initial funding and expects to extend its position and expand the genealogy technology business through a more aggressive online presence and by continuing its leadership in the retail software category. "Genealogy is one of the leading subjects on the Internet -- in August, 1999, there were more than two million unique unduplicated visitors to genealogy web sites(i). With the financial and organizational backing of our new partners, we will not only continue to be a leader in the existing genealogy business, but we'll have the ability to substantially expand this rapidly- growing segment by reaching millions of consumers with an interest in their heritage and giving them the online tools to explore their personal history," said Rob Armstrong, Chief Executive Officer of Genealogy.com. "To achieve this goal, we will utilize our strong history of more than 10 years of leadership in the genealogy technology space with Family Tree Maker software, Family Archive CDs, FamilyTreeMaker.com, and Genealogy.com." Genealogy.com is already a powerhouse in the genealogy arena with three established business units (software, online resources, CD- ROMs). The Company's evolution to an Internet-focused company will be expedited by its ability to leverage established and profitable software and data CD-ROM products. For example, the Company's subscription-based site encompassing genealogy research materials and databases, www.GenealogyLibrary.com, is set to become the premier online genealogy research site with the addition of information from the Company's Family Archive CD collection, ranging from passenger and immigration lists to census records and more. Already this year, the organization has won numerous industry awards, including the Software Information Industry Association's 1999 "Codie Award" for Best Internet Commerce Site, and Top 100 Website and Editor's Choice awards from PC Magazine. The Company's flagship retail software program, the number-one-selling Family Tree Maker, has sold well over two million copies to date. This installed base combines with hundreds of thousands of additional genealogy enthusiasts to form a thriving online community of people -- more than one million unique unduplicated users visit Genealogy.com's genealogy web sites every month(ii), spending hours searching for data and exchanging information and advice with each other. "The Genealogy.com organization has long been a leader in its category," said Nickolas Davatzes, President & CEO, A&E Television Networks. "We believe that there is a huge potential market of people with an interest in family history, as evidenced by the popularity of our Biography series on A&E Networks, and the success of The History Channel. This strong new partnership will provide opportunities to capitalize on the growing genealogy technology marketplace through the power of television, at the same time enabling Genealogy.com to invest in further enhancing its core competencies through the power of the Internet." The partners will contribute expertise in their respective categories to benefit Genealogy.com. A&E Television Networks' investment will provide significant on-air promotion to educate its viewers on the benefits of using the Internet to explore family heritage. Mattel is offering its expertise in online and software technology through the Broderbund division, which is a leader in family-oriented software. This is part of a broader strategy by which Mattel is utilizing its software assets to become a major online participant. A&E Television Networks, a joint venture of The Hearst Corporation, ABC, Inc. and NBC, is an award-winning, international media company offering consumers a diverse communications environment ranging from television programming, magazine publishing, web sites, music, to home videos, as well as supporting nationwide educational initiatives. Television programming consists of four networks in the United States: A&E Network, The History Channel, The Biography Channel, and History Channel International. Internationally, A&E Television Networks is involved in a series of networks in 60 countries. The A&E Web site is located at www.AandE.com; BIOGRAPHY at www.biography.com; and The History Channel at www.historychannel.com. The additional partners are backing Genealogy.com with financial investments. Hearst Interactive Media, a unit of The Hearst Corporation, manages a wide variety of consumer and business- related Internet sites and has made core investments in Internet- related companies including Women.com, brandwise.com, and GoodHome.com. Other strategic equity investments include E Ink Corporation, Exodus Communications, Medscape, Quokka Sports, StarMedia Network, Talk City, and Tavolo (formerly Digital Chef). Thomas H. Lee Partners, with more than $6 billion of capital under management, offers its highly regarded experience in building market-leading brands such as Snapple, Rayovac, Experian, and The Learning Company. 1. [SURGENER] Looking for Wyrosdick/sojourners in South Carolina
    2. Suzanne Schroeder
    3. Hi! Recently, I have discovered the advantages of the internet and genealogy and found it has done wonders and has advanced search more in two weeks than in the 8 years of my on again/off again searching. I was looking for information on Thomas Stevenson and I seem to find more information on the people he married than anything on his own ancestry. There might be some long lost relations on this list, but I'm interested in tracing every line I can back to when they came over since it is frustrating not even knowing where your ancestors are from! It's fascinating that I'm meeting long lost cousins from all over the country, and therefore, I am looking forward to meeting more. In the 1820's in Orangeburg South Carolina, I have come across many references to a Linda "Deliliah" Sojourner marrying Andrew Paul Wyrosdick giving birth to Margeret Wyrosdick who married Thomas DeLoach Stevenson. Does anyone have any information on Linda? Thanks, s.s.

    1. [SURGENER] Address Change
    2. Joel and I have changed servers to AOL. The new address is the same as the address at the lake if you happen to have that one. It is <[email protected]> Hopefully all mail will be forwarded from IBM for a period of time. Don't want to loose touch with anyone! Have a great week! Jane and Joel in Kentucky

    1. [SURGENER] WWI Draft Applications Update
    2. This was forwarded to me as a FYI - you all might find it interesting, too. Ruby _________________ >>>Good Morning everyone: I played hooky from work yesterday and spent the day >>>at the NARA Branch in Atlanta and it jogged my memory to pass on some >>>information to everyone. >>> >>>Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approx. 1917-1918) every male between the >>>age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. The information >>>found on the card was provided by the individual himself. The registration >>>cards vary in information depending on the individual draft board. But by >>>and large the cards include: The full name of the person (this means first, >>>full middle name, any additional middle names and last name); the current >>>address of the man; his age; his birthdate (some include his place of >>>birth); whether he is a US citizen or a naturalized citizen (some ask if his >>>father was a naturalized citizen and his father's race); his race; his >>>occupation; where he is employed (name of employer); address or location of >>>employment; name and address of his next of kin; some cards ask if the man >>>is married or single and how many people he supports. The card is signed by >>>the draftee. On the back of the card his physical description is noted: >>>Height is broken down by short, medium, tall although some cards give the >>>actual height in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout although some >>>cards list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair; any >>>deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in one >>>eye, etc); the name and address of the draft board and the date. >>> >>>When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA branch >>>the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are hundreds and >>>hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed them - in >>>state order. However, within each state the cards were filed by draft board, >>>not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of the microfilm >>>difficult to say the least. >>> >>>The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each box >>>after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands and >>>thousands of cards into - state and then COUNTY order and then in >>>alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes.
