I just looked at the 1860 Knox Co., KY, census for Abraham Surgener. The two (1850 and 1860) are so different, are they TWO different Abrahams as Joyce suggested, or are ages very wrong on one or the other and one was using first names and the other middle names? They are both below for comparison. Ruby .................... 1850 Dist. Tina I found the marriage record for Sarah Surgener on the Whitley Co. genweb site. On any record I have found for her and on family records I've been given she always listed her birthplace as KY. On some family records that I was given the surname Ward was listed with her name. ie; Sarah Surgener Ward. So I have wondered if she was married before to a man named Ward. Many of the family records have proven not to be true so I've never looked into the name Ward. Maybe its time to do that. She was born in 1833 so in 1850 she would have been abt. 18. Thanks, Joyce
The in charge remark was only meant as a greeting so please don't take it so seriously Ruby. I've looked for the email about the second Abraham Surgener but can't find it right now. I know I printed it out because it seemed to be important. Since I haven't been able to find a 1850 census for him maybe he didn't exist. I believe the other Abraham Surgener was married to a Celia/Selia. And now that I have my memory working he might have lived in Knox Co.KY. I have a copy of the 1850 census for Abraham Surgener married to Nancy with six children. Is that the one your talking about Tina? This one was Whitley Co. KY. I appreciate everyone's help, I've been stuck on this for a long time. Joyce
Oh geez! This isn't my day! I can't count for some reason, and I think I'm trying to come down with something. You are right..my math is way off, and I have a relative who was born 1833 and knew her to be about 17 in 1850. I don't know what I was thinking of! You might want to check into Ward for the 1850 census. You might just find her! Always check everything including family lore. My mother thought her father was adopted, until I showed her that he was listed in two consecutive censuses as "son", and after comparing his photo to the man who raise him, there is no denying that they were father and son. HE may have towered over his father in adulthood, but those faces almost match! I will bet the "Ward" is why you are hitting dead-ends. Let us know if you find her. I want to hear success stories, too! Hi Tina It's good to know someone's in charge. I am looking for info. on Sarah A. Surgener b. abt 1832 KY d. 1889 AZ. m. William C. Watkins 1855 Whitley Co. KY. They had eight children, James Buchanan b.1856 KY, David Franklin b. 1858 IN or MO, William Douglas b. 1860 MO. John Abraham b. 1866 IA, Marion Alexander b. 1868 KS, Ezra Monroe b. 1870 KS, Letitia Jane b. 1872 OK Ind. Terr. and Laura Ellen b. 1874 TX. I think her father might have been Abraham Surgener of Whitley Co. KY. There is another Abraham Surgener in KY at this time also so I'm not sure which one is her father. I am looking for an 1850 census for these Abraham Surgener's hoping that my Sarah might be listed on it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Joyce
Probably so, Joyce. The records I quoted from are only the indices and give only the name of the head of the household and the place where he was enumerated, plus the page number where you can find him. Was your Sarah listed in census records as having been born in KY? Do they all agree on that point? Do you have a copy of the actual marriage records? Do they list her as single or was a Surgener of any spelling the bondsman or witness or ??? Was she listed with a different surname? Is it possible that Surgener was a 1st marriage and then she married again? I'm trying to think of all the possibilities. Being 33, this could have been a 2nd marriage for her. I would check Whitley county for a male Surgener buried between 1854 and 1855 when she married. See if maybe she was a widow. Tina
Hello everybody. It's your list manager again! I know this list has been inactive for quite some time. I understand, too. Each of us has a different spelling and we are all sitting by brick walls hoping to locate new data. I would like to issue a challenge. Each of us has done our fair share of data collection, and each of us keeps wondering just what we should do with that stuff that doesn't fit into our own lines. We get near a trash can, and our hands tighten around the papers. We can't seem to let it go, "just in case". Let's each post what we have collected to this list so we can share it with each other, and see if what we have been sitting on might help another researcher somewhere. I will be looking through my data here and will start sending to the list. I haven't accumulated a whole bunch, but what I have, I will send. have a great day! Hi Joyce, Could you tell us where the other Abraham Surgener was in Kentucky? We show one in Whitley Co. in 1850 then Knox Co. afterwards. A young Abraham Surgener was in Hawkins Co., TN, in 1850. But no record of a second Abraham Surgener in Kentucky 1850. There are so many spelling variations it would be easy to miss one and I'd appreciate learning of his whereabouts to include on the Surgener census index page. FYI, someone was always in charge of the SURGENER-L mail list. I started it in 1998 and had it until February of this year when I turned it back to RootsWeb because of overwhelming spamming from someone who forged the return address and used it to mail out junk. All those bounced back into my personal mail box. Then Darryl Pearce in Canada took over the list immediately and he used tracing software to follow the routing of the spammer. It stopped for a few days but then started again from several other points instead of just one, so the thief probably passed the address out to others. Neither Darryl nor I could get any cooperation at all from RootsWeb on this matter. Now Tina is going to be brave and give it a try and we will hope that whoever was falsifying the return will grow tired of their "fun" soon and Tina will have good results. Ruby L. Good day, List Members! I would like to introduce myself to you. I took over managing this list today, and the GenConnect boards a few days ago. My name is Tina Hall. I live in the beautiful state of Washington, and am a direct descendant of John and Sarah Sojourner of MS. They are an allied family of the Descendants of the Jersey Settlers who came from NJ to Adams county, MS in the late 1700's. John Sojourner is the son of Mrs. LaJournier of France (A French Huguenot), who landed in Charleston, SC between 1740 and 1750 with 4 children in tow. Nothing is known about her husband. They moved west with the Swayze's and King's of NJ, and ended up in MS. I descend through John and Sarah's daughter Mary Katherine Sojourner who married Reuben Cassels in MS. Let's get this list busy again! I look forward to learning about each member's lines and see if someone else on the list has seen something that can help another member. have a great day! Hello everybody, Awhile back, Debbie shared a lot of information on Abraham and Selia Surgener of Whitley/Knox/Laurel Counties, KY, for the SURGENER webpages. Debbie's email address on the webpage is now failing. Does anybody have a current email address for Debbie or does anyone know her last name so we can find her with new information? Thanks, Ruby
