DdHober Dorothy, I would appreciate a copy of the article. Snail mail is fine. Also, I am sending a copy of this email to SUMPTER Rootsweb. John J. Sumpter is probably the son of James and Elizabeth Hilliard Sumpter of Hot Springs, Ark. He was born 7 Jul 1842 in Warrenton, MO, and died 22 June 1899 probably in Hot Springs. In his 1880 household (Federal Census) his wife is listed as Nannie E., William age 40 a brother, Elizabeth age 59 born KY, Mother, and two sisters, Sallie E. age 26 and Jennie L age 19. James the father of John, is an interesting man. He was born in Knox Co, TN, 17 Sept 1794, to Thomas and Lydia Kirkpatrick Sumpter. James married (1) Susan Geren 1819 Knox Co and they had the following children: Thomas Carol, Lydia Ann, Susan Elvira and Joseph. In 1833, James married Nancy Hopper in Parke Co, IN and had the following children: Hiram and Julia Ann. In 1838, James married Elizabeth Hilliard in Hancock Co, IN. Children of this marriage were William, John J. (apparently the man listed above), Ellen, Emmeline, Anna E., Sarah and possibly Hawkins. Nancy Hopper Sumpter and her two children were living in Knox Co, TN in 1860 with relatives of James. Both Nancy and Elizabeth filed pension claims for James' service during the War of 1812. The 1850 Federal Census of Hot Springs lists James as a tavener. Thomas who married Lydia Kirkpatrick was a son of William and Judith Randall Sumpter of Virginia and North Carolina. Thomas served in the Revolution and his family is well documented using his pension application. Jane Sumpter Malone-George
