A number of Sumpter researchers are looking for the parents of Jesse Sumpter b 1760-1788 NC (married Elizabeth Mason Jan 1812) and also for the parents of Isham (Isom) Sumpter b 1790-1800 NC (married Susannah Loving Rollins Feb 1816). The book Paso del Aguila written by Jesse Sumpter, a son of Isham and Susannah Sumpter, does not give the parentage of Isham. It has been thought that these men were sons of a William Sumpter. But which William? Following are William Sumpters who probably were in the North Carolina area during this time period. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated: l. Captain William Sumpter was a brother of General Thomas Sumter. Captain William married Judith Randall in Virginia before moving to North Carolina and had 9 children. According to a letter in the Draper Papers (located at the Wisconsin Historical Society) Captain William married a second time and always claimed to have fathered 19 children. This letter was written by Capt. William's daughter in law Jane ?? Captain William died in 1819. 2. William Sumpter born @1757 VA was a son of Captain William and Judith Randall Sumpter. His wife Jane ? was born in 1777 and they are the known parents of a son Joel. However, was this William Sumpter married before he married Jane? If so, does anyone know the identity of his first wife? 3. John Sumpter was a brother of General Thomas Sumter and also of Captain William Sumpter. John married Catherine ? (possibly Van Pelt) and most of their children are documented according to Dr. Ward Sumpter and to Harold Sumpter and their research. Did John and Catherine have a son named William? If so, what did happen to him since we have no documented information concerning him. 4. There are two documented marriages for a William Sumpter that I have found during my research of this time period. However, I do not know if either of the following Williams is the same as one of the above listed men: The IGI lists a wedding for William Sumpter and Catherine Brown, widow, 20 April 1784 in Charleston, SC. This wedding is in the St. Phillips Parish Register. Also in the register is a son John christened 20 Feb 1785 born to William and Catherine Sumpter. Also on the IGI. a William Sumpter married a Margaret Hoskins in 1774 in Albemarle Co, VA, Can anyone help with further information about these men?
