While going through old notes, I found the following which tie in with data submitted by Jim Landrum earlier this year. In the Valentine Papers by Edward Pleasants Valentine, page 253, Archibald Cary of Chesterfield Co, VA, to Richard Sumpter of same county, 18 1/4 acres in Chesterfield, Deed Book 2, p 82, dated 8 May 1756. Also in Valentine's book, a Stephen Sumter of New Kent County, owned land in precinct 17 of the county. It stated that Stephen Sumter was among the landowners who formed Precinct 4 in 1720. Can anyone determine who Stephen Sumter was and how he might be related to Richard, George and William Sumpter, if he was part of the same family? On 10 Aug 1784 Charles Bush paid to P. Ballard, Albemarle County, VA, 25 pounds for part of a tract purchased by William Sumter, adjacent Leonard Davis. Deed Book 9, page 10. Can anyone identify this William Sumpter? Is he the man of Albemarle County who married Margaret Hoskins in Albemarle Co in 1774? Just prior to the Civil War, there is a record in Surry Co, NC, of two Sumpter women's marriages: Menty Sumpter married J. W. Alltizer 22 Mar 1860 Sarah Sumpter married Floyd Sumpkins 10 June 1855 Can anyone identify these two women? All help will be appreciated and will enable me to update my Sumpter/Sumter cardfile.
