Elizabeth Catherine (as she appeared on the census and in Curtis' notes) was the daughter of Asa and Jemima Dickerson Sumpter of Floyd Co, VA. Asa born 15 Mar 1825 Floyd Co died 14 May 1898 Floyd Co. He married Jemima Dickerson 23 Dec 1845. E. Catherine was their second child according to Curtis. Asa was the son of Richard and Caty Sowder Sumpter. Richard was born 19 Dec 1801 died 1 Dec 1882 both in Floyd Co. He married Catherine (Caty) Sowder 10 Feb 1824 in Franklin Co, VA. Surety John Sowder, Minister Wilson Turner. Asa was their first son. Richard was the son of Edmund Sr and Elizabeth Kingery Sumpter. Edmund Sr was born 25 Feb 1770 Charlotte Co VA and died 10 April 1856. He married Elizabeth Kingery 16 Mar 1795 probably in Franklin Co,VA. Elizabeth listed Pennsylvania as her birth state. Surety for their wedding Jacob Kingery and Jacob Miller was the minister. Richard was their known fifth child. Edmund Sr was the son of George and Elizabeth Gross Sumpter probably of Charlotte Co VA. We have no definite dates for this couple except that George's will was dated 31 Sep 1800 and he supposedly was killed in a lumbering accident in 1806. Elizabeth is listed on the 1806 tax list with George, Jr., leading us to believe that George, Sr. was deceased. Edmund Sr served during the War 1812 - source Draper 18VV115.
