Hi Marvin Thanks for your query. Apparently I lost my first answer to you but did not realize it. I am also sending a copy of this to the Sumpter rootsweb so others will have it. I shall try to put source info at the end of each generation. l. John Lindsay Sumpter born 1862 probably Jasper Co, IA. He was the son of Bluford and Mary Sharp or Cottrell Sumpter. John L. married Gertrude Alma Wilson (1868-1930) 29 August 1887 in Polk Co, IA. John L. is buried in theSlaughter Cemetery, Jasper Co, IA. Children: Marion, Ruth, Faye, Doris and Raymond Source: Polk Co Marriages, Des Moines City Directory 1909, 1880 Jasper Co, IA, census, 1915 Polk Co, IA census Slaughter Cemetery, Jasper Co, IA. 2. Bluford Sumpter was born 1 July 1834 in Indiana and died before 1875. He is buried in theSlaughter Cemetery, Jasper Co. IA. Bluford was the son of John and Sally Hobbs Sumpter. He married Mary J. Cottrell 11 May 1856, Jasper Co, IA. Bluford served in Co, I. 39th IaInf, enlisting 12 Aug 1862 and was discharged 5 June 1865. Bluford was killed in a well cave in. His children were in 1880 John Rush House, Jasper Co. Children: Sarah A., John married Gertrude Wilson, Thomas married Mamie Roush (Rush) and Clara, also possible Tira. Sources: War record, War Memorial Stone, Marriage records in Jasper Co, Census records, IGI at the Mormon Library and notes from Jean Kiser. 3. John Sumpter was born 10 Mar 1794 Virginia son (?) of John and Elizabeth Chadwick Sumpter. John died 10 January 1856 in Jasper Co, IA. He married Sally Hobbs 16 Sep 1813 Tazewell, Claiborne Co, TN. John served in the War 1812 as a private in Capt Hamilton's TN Militia. The family lived Vermillion Co, IN until 1855 when they moved to Jasper Co, IA. along with daughter Polly and her husband Wm. Porter. Sally Hobbs Sumpter is listed on the 1880 IA census a widow born TN and living the grandson Enos Sumpter. Children: Thomas, John Jr, Enos, William Hamilton (Hambleton) Elizabeth, Polly, Thomas 2nd, Henry, Isaac, Bluford and Saray Jane. Sources: Federal Census records, IA census records, IGI of the Mormon Church records, Jim Landrum research, Marriage records, Bounty land records W28238-40-50, also W88474-120-55. Because John and Sally Hobbs Sumpter were in Claiborne Co, TN, I believe John was a son of John and Elizabeth Chadwick Sumpter. However, there were several men in Claiborne Co, TN, at this time all of whom were probably sons of Henry and Agnes Dillon Sumpter. The sons were: John and Elizabeth Chadwick Sumpter, William and Margaret Pyrtle Sumpter, George and Susannah Mays Sumpter plus Henry, Jr. Henry, Sr., is also believed to have moved to Tennessee. I do hope this helps with your research, Marvin. If there is anyone out there who can add more information to what I have written, please do so. Thanks. Jane Sumpter Malone-George
