Lucille, I am forwarding a copy of this email to the Sumpter rootsweb. Someone out there may have more data for you...let's hope so. You asked about William Garrett Sumpter b 1837 in Tennessee. Also, he had a brother named Lewis and possibly a mother Sarah "Sally". My records show this man in Letcher Co, KY in the 1860-70-80 federal census records. Dr. Ward Sumpter who researched extensively in Kentucky and Virginia believed that William Garrett and Lewis probably were descendants of the group of Sumpters who came from Henry Co, VA, and settled in Claiborne Co, TN, about 1800. This family consisted of Henry, Sr.,(wife Agnes Dillon), William (wife Margaret Pyrtle), George (wife Susannah Mays), John (wife Elizabeth Chadwick) and Henry, Jr. (wife probably Jane ?). The 1840 census for Claiborne Co, TN, lists males under 5 in the houses of three men: Henderson, George and Henry. Later census records list a younger William in Henderson's house which would eliminate him. But which man, George or Henry is the father of your William Garrett Sumpter, I do not know. Henderson, George and Henry must be sons of one of the men listed above but I do not know which one. I do thank you for the information you sent: the names of the wives of William and Lewis. This data will be added to my card file for future reference. Good luck with your research. Jane Sumpter Malone-George
