A couple of tidbits picked up 2/7/2000 at Memphis Public Library >From the Draper manuscripts a letter dated 1872 was received from the Goochland County, Virginia, Clerk, stating that he had done a thorough job of investigating their records and no information was there on any Sumpter or Sumter. >From the Louisa County Court Order Book December 19, 1743 Upon the motion of William Sumtor it is ordered that his list of tithables be added to Ambrose Joshua Smith's list. (Shows William Sumpter was assigned at one time by the court to take tax information so he could read and write) Jim Landrum.
