A review of GROSS genealogy and records may unravel the identity of George Sumpter who married Elizabeth Gross. She is believed to be the daughter of Edmund Gross and Sarah Childress; and, based on Gross researcher's data and the following, she is believed to be born between 1735 and 1745 in Prince Edward Co., VA. If George Sumpter and Elizabeth Gross were married in Charlotte Co., VA as some Sumpter researchers suggest, then it had to be in 1765 or later since the county was established in 1765. Perhaps, one of these days we will find their marriage record. Edmund Gross was probably born between 1700 and 1710 in Charles City County and came into what is now Prince Edward County about 1735. Edmund first appears on Prince Edward County records in 1743 when he was named in a road construction project in the vicinity of Bush River. In 1745, Edmund Gross was designated as supervisor for a stretch of the Appomattox River from the mouth of Buffalo Creek to the mouth of Bush River. The mouth of Buffalo Creek is about a mile above the present location of Farmville, Prince Edward County; and, the mouth of Bush River is several miles below the town. Edmund is presumed to have been living between these two Appomattox River tributaries, probably on or near the small tributary named Grosses Branch which runs along the eastern side of the business district in Farmville. In 1752, Edmund Gross was on William Caldwell's Lunenburg Co., VA tax list. This list covered the Cub Creek area in what is now Charlotte County. Cub Creek is a tributary to the Roanoke River. Thus, Edmund Gross moved from the Farmville area, Prince Edward County, to the Cub Creek area between 1745 and 1752. In 1762, Edmund Gross was living on 631 acres on the Rattlesnake Fork of Cub Creek. In 1764, while living in Cornwall Parish, Lunenburg Co., VA, Edmond Groce was accessed taxes on two tithes and 306 acres. On the same tax list, fourteen tax payers separated the names of Edmund Groce and Edward Sumpter who was accessed tax on one tithe and 220 acres. http://c-23.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/archives/va/lunenburg/census/sun007.txt In 1765, Cornwall Parish was separated from Lunenburg County to form Charlotte County. Jim Landrum states, "In 1774 George Sumpter bought land in Charlotte County on the Rocky Branch of CUBB CREEK." Edmund Sumpter's will is recorded on page 408 in the Charlotte County, Virginia Will Book 1, 1765-1791. A partial review of the above records suggests sufficient circumstantial evidence for Edward Sumpter to be the father of George Sumpter, who married Elizabeth Gross. Therefore, I suggest a thorough review of Lunenburg County and Charlotte County records to prove or disprove this theory. The majority of the above information was provided by Jack E. Gross.
