    1. Re: book "THE GAMECOCK"

    3. The book "The Gamecock" was written by Robert D. Bass and published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York. Several years ago, I obtained a copy through interlibrary loan. It is a decent account of General Sumter's life and does list only the following sibblings: William, Thomas, Patience and Anne. We know for sure that there was at least a brother John and a sister Martha. Most researchers seem to believe that Edmond of Charlotte Co, VA, is also a brother. William married Judith Randall (1) and had the following children: John married Ann Alexander; William (jr) married Jane ? and possibly a first wife; James married Nancy Jinkins: Thomas married Lydia Kirkpatrick; Elizabeth married Edward Owings or Owens; Amelia married ?Buckner; Fielding married Sarah ?; Judith married ? Randall and Livingston married Charlotte Temple. Tradition - according to William jr's wife Jane when she talked to Dr. Lyman Draper - says that following Judith Randall Sumpter's death, William remarried and became the father of a total of 19 children. To date, I have no record of a second marriage or who the woman was. Can anyone help? John married Catherine ? about 1762. Their children: John; Henry married Peggy Taylor; Thomas married Elizabeth Coffey; James; Catherine possibly married Hiram Geren; Betty married Richard Ramsey; William; Polly married Gabriel Loving; Martha married Abraham Sudderth. Thomas marrried Mary Cantey Jameson. They had only one surviving child: Thomas, Jr., who married Nathalie deLage about 1802. Patience married first John Franklin and had Anne, Dorcas, Elizabeth and Maria. Patience married second James Sudderth and had William, James, Agnes, Sally and Mildred. Ann married Thomas Land, Sr. Children unknown to me at this time. Edmond married Claudine (Anne) ? and had the following children: Mary Anne; William married Betsy Wheeler; Thomas married Mary Todd; Martha (Patsy); Aggy; John married Hanna Morrison; Susanna married L. Tackett; Andrew married Kezziah ?; and Nanny. Martha married William Sudderth in Albemarle Co, VA. I have no record of their children. Several people have given me this data and helped get it into the correct families. I am concerned that sons and daughters have been confused and given to the wrong parents but until we have better records, the above shall stand. Dr. Ward Sumpter of KY was my primary source. He conducted extensive research during his lifetime and shared it with me many years ago. Ward was a descendant of Edmond's son, William and Betsy Wheeler Sumpter. All clarifications and additions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jane Sumpter Malone-George jmgeorge@dubuque.net
