    1. Re: Richard Sumpter
    2. Well, to all of you possibly descended from Henry Sumpter and Agnes Dillon. I have been back from my trip to Virginia for awhile, but have been in the process of moving across town. Anyway, LeeAnn and I had a nice trip to Virginia, but just one tip. Dont go on a cross country trip hoping to do genealogy when your spouse could care less. I got to do about 6 or 7 hours total and that was under extreme pressure to get it over with. A couple of things. Spent a couple of nights in Martinsville the county seat of Henry County, Virginia. They have a great new courthouse but dont seem real helpful to a genealogist. Did not find anything new there. However, I was able to walk on what was the land of Henry Sumpter on the Smith river in Henry County. It is in now in what is Bassett, Va. About 5 miles northwest of Martinsville. You can see why they may have left for Tennessee. Except for right along the Smith river the area very hilly with only small patches of land for Agriculture. From the Chesterfield County Courthouse one new tidbit on Henry's probable Father, Richard. Page 7, Deed Book #4 John Martin of Chesterfield County to George Lovell of Same, for 24/5 pounds, land Martin purchased of Robert Wooldridge and where RICHARD SUMPTER now lives, near the upper end of Chesterfield County. 100 acres. Unless money is repaid to Lovell by 5/Nov/1759. Witness William Shepard and Matthew Chitwood and John Wooton. Recorded 05/Oct/1759. Once again Richard is tied to the Martin and Wooldridge names on deeds. I am still pursuing further records and will let you know if anything new comes up. Jim Landrum
