    3. Just returned from a trip and found these wills and thought somebody might be able to get some information out of them. Henry Sumpter was a son of John Sumpter (brother of General Thomas Sumpter). The will was found in the "Bone Rattler" the bulletin of the Swain County Genealogical and Historical Society" Vol 4, No 4, Spring 1988. Richard Ramsey married Betty Sumpter who was a daughter of John Sumpter (brother of General Thomas Sumpter). Walt Pollock waltpat@krmi.net Henry Sumpters Will IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN. I, HENRY SUMPTER, of the County of Caldwell and State of North Caroline, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, but weak of body, and knowing the uncertainty of human life, do make and publish this my last will and testament, in the manner and form following, that is to say: 1st. I cimmend my soul to God who gave it and my body to be buried in a decent Christian-like manner, and my funeral expenses together with my just debts, however and to whomsoever owing, to be paid out of the first monies that may come into the hands of my Executors (hereinafter named) as a part and parcel of my estate. 2nd. I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Peggy all my property and effects of which I may die seized and possessed, during her natural life. 3rd. My will and desire is that after the death of my beloved wife, my property shall be disposed of in the following manner (to-wit). I give and bequeath to the heirs and legal representatives of my deceased sister, PATTY SUDDRETH, POLLY LOVING & BETTY RAMSEY equal shares of all my property not hereinafter disposed of. 4th. My will and desire is that my brother, THOMAS SUMPTER'S children are to have equal shares of my estate, except THOMAS SUMPTER, his son, to whom I give my negro boy, ALBERT, after the death of my beloved wife, PEGGY. 5th. My will and desire is that HENRY SUMPTER TAYLOR, son of HENRY TAYLOR, shall have an equal share in my estate. 6th. My will and desire is that my wife shall have absolutely, to be disposed of as she may think proper, all my household and kitchen furniture. 7th. My will and desire is that my negro man, SAMPSON, and child, MAY, shall be sold by my Executors (hereinafter named) to some humane master or to whomever they may choose to live with provided they can get something like a fair price, but in order that they may not be separated , or sold to those who might treat them ill. I would rather some sacrafice be made in view of their future welfare. 8th. I hereby constitute and appoint JAMES HARPER and S.P. DULA, Executors to this my last will and testament, to execute the same according to the true intent and meaning thereof, hereby revoking and declaring utterly void all other last wills and testament by heretofore made. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereto set my hand and seal on this the 4th day of September, 1857. RICHARD RAMSEY'S WILL IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN, (or be it remembered) that I RICHARD RAMSEY, of the County of Wayn and State of Kentucky, being weak in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory, blessed by Almighty God for the same, do make and publish this my Last Will and testament in manner of same following, viz: First I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, BETTY RAMSEY, the whole of my estate during her lifetime and after her death I do will to my daughters POLLY and PATSY RAMSEY, the kitchen home, a sufficiency of fire wood off of the land. I also give and bequeath unto my eldest son WILLIAM RAMSEY and BETTY CRISP, the whole of the moveable property. I do also give and bequeath to my three sons, ISHAM, RANDLE and RAMSOM RAMSEY, the whole of the land to be equally divided between them, two of the latter whom I appoint Executors of this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all others by me made. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand, seal this the 19th day of January One Thousand eight hundred and twenty two.
