I have spent years researching the Sumpter line in & around Randolph County MO. I found a new Sumpter that I know nothing about from a local newspaper. A Runaway Couple Spliced. On Sunday night last (12 Nov 1871) Mr. Francis M. Sumpter, of Chariton county, and Laura E. Whitmire, whose father lives on the Southern border of this county (Randolph) took it into their heads that they would run off and get married. They arrived at Uncle Sam. Davis' residence near Huntsville about midnight, but "uncle Sam." being a little blind declined to marry them that night. They set up the balance of the night at the residence of an acquaintance in town and next morning were duly spliced by "Uncle Sam." after which they went on their way rejoicing; Huntsville Herald, Huntsville, MO Thursday 16 Nov 1871 Does anyone have any idea?
