    1. [SUMPTER] Coziah Sumpter
    2. Hi Pat I am sending a copy of this to the rootsweb; perhaps someone out there can help determine who Coziah married. You wrote that Coziah Sumpter of 1850 Greenup Co, KY, Census was your ggg grandmother and you believe that her husband was a George Sumpter who died prior to the 1840 census. All of Coziah's children listed Virginia as birth state. Coziah's daughter Matilda married William Tio (Tyo) 11 May 1842 in Henry Co, VA, and the surety was Andrew Sumpter, possibly Matilda's brother. You state that you descend from Matilda Sumpter Tio (Tyo). There was an Edmund Sumpter who lived in Charlotte Co, VA. After his death prior to 1800, a 1797 deed lists Edmund's heirs as Mary Anne, William who married Betsy Wheeler in 1790 and eventually settled in Warren Co, KY; Thomas who married Mary Todd in 1801; Martha; Aggy; Andrew; Nanny; John who married Hannah Morrison in 1805 and settled in Giles Co,VA; and Susannah who married a Tackett. Much of this data comes from the papers of Dr. Ward Sumpter of Bowling Green, KY. It is generally believed that this Edmund was a son of the William and Elizabeth Sumpter of Albemarle Co, VA. There was a George Sumpter - wife Elizabeth - of Montgomery Co, VA. He had the following children: Richard b 1767 married Mary Kingery and settled in Southern Ohio; Sarah married John Jones; Edmund b 1770 married Elizabeth Kingery; Agnes married Charles Greer; George, Jr b 1788 married Catherine Prillaman in 1808; and Polly married Abraham Tice. This data was researched and documented by Curtis Sumpter of Floyd, VA. George, Jr., appears on the Floyd County, VA, tax list in 1831 and I believe he and his wife are listed on the Saline Co, Arkansas, 1850 census. Andrew Sumpter appears in Virginia Census records from 1810 Charlotte Co to 1830 and 1840 Henry Co. Judging by the age of the eldest male in all of these households, it would appear that Andrew lived to the age of 80 plus and probably passed away sometime after 1840 making his birth date about 1760. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, while there are many children listed in Andrew's households, they are not known to researchers. Pat, I am sorry that the above data does not answer your questions. However, perhaps it will let you know of Sumpter men who cannot be Coziah's husband. Is there anyone on the SUMPTER-L rootsweb who can help us sort through these people? Perhaps we can get some discussion going again!! Jane Sumpter Malone-George
