Happy Huntin' Jim Young ================== Descendants of Richard SUMPTER - 26 Aug 1998 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - FIRST GENERATION 1. Richard SUMPTER. Jim Landrum, "I have just looked at the Henrico County Court orders from 1735 to 1744. They are almost impossible to read. I even had an index to work with. About the best to come up out of this is that Isaac Robinson, William Sheppard and Ann Matthews were allowed expense money to travel to testify for Richard Sumpter in a case against Charles Payne. From other records Isaac Robinson and Charles Payne (Charle Pean) seem to be neighbors of his in a list of tithables from King William Parish in 1744. From the Book "Turff and Twigg"" and St. James Northam Parish records Richard Sumter is the Godfather of one Charle Peane(Payne) born 17/Dec/1747. From the patent information of the Hugenots in Virginia and Manikin Town, Patent # 1447 was issued to Francis Delpish . His wife was Mary Dupre and she remarried to Charles Pene after her first Husband's death. There is a birth record in that Parish for Anne Pene on 10/Oct/1737 to Charles and Marie Pene. The first Charles Pene dies in 1747 before his son is born, leaving a will. In it he names his wife Marie, daughters Mary Delpish, Judith Delpish, Ann Pain, Prescill Pain, Sarah Pain, and step-son Peter Delpish. He also mentions the one that my wife is with child with at present. When the Child is born 17/Dec/1747 he is named Charles Peane and William Shepard and Richard Sumter are the Godfathers. William Shepard is also the Grandson of a Delpish. I think that evidence leans towards the idea that Richard Sumpter's wife Jean( I don not have that documented) is probably a member of an Hugenot family. I have seen a map of the area of that Patent and it is in the area of Henrico that became Chesterfield in 1749. In the Chesterfield County Will Book #5 06/Sept/1798 is the sale of the estate of John Sumpter and at the same time in other Court Cases Henry and William Sumpter are names as wards of the Poor, district 2, as orphans. This John is probably the Brother of the Henry we believe we descend from and Henry and William are our Henry's nephews. This is also probably the John Sumpter that was the only Sumpter from Virginia(Chesterfield County) that served in the revolution. I also believe that his orphan son Hnery is the one from Manchester that marries Sophia Straus in 1808 in that area." Richard SUMPTER and Jean had the following children: +2 i. George SUMPTER. +3 ii. It runs North Northwest into the Willis River about one mile south of Lakeside Village about 2 miles west of Carterville. This is in the North half of Cumberland County. Land to be resold by June 1st, 1776 the proceeds going to the debt owed by Henry Sumpter to Charles Woodson and Company, any balance going to pay a debt owed to Robert Pleasants by said Henry Sumpter, any overplus to go to Henry Sumpter. Witnesses: John Swann, Jos. Carrington, Edward Linthicum. The family must have left for Henry County, Virginia, soon after this as they start showing up in Henry County records in 1777.
