(Source: Barbara Jones) "Our family story was that John, wife "Doan" and babies were making a wagon crossing and the wagon overturned. She drowned. John and the babies and a mule made it to land and walked for two days and were rescued by a colored family living in a soddy house. They lived there with them until the family could be notified and could come for them. She was born on August 23, 1875 in Kansas. married to John Elias Sumpter in Okla territory on June 7, 1894. Mr. Sumpter died in 1941 in January. One, son, Fred sumpter died in a house fire in May of this year. Survivors include: Two sons, Elias (polly)Sumpter, step-son, of Konowa, Okla. and Louis Sumpter of Bartlesville. Sumpter was born in Tuttle, okla. on may 19, 1906 and had lived in Pawhuska for most of his life. Survivors include his mother, mrs Anna Sumpter of Pawhuska, three sisters, Mrs earnestine leadford, Mrs. James Gullett, Mrs. Madeline Mason, and two brothers, Lewis Sumpter and Elias ( polly)Sumpter Casket bearers were John W.
