    3. Does anyone have information on the Henry Sumpter,Sr. d ca 1817 in Mulberry Gap, Claiborne/Hancock Co. TN? I am trying to prove that he had daugher Nancy b ca 1781 VA (probably Henry Co. VA) that married John Baker Sr. also of Mulberry Gap. I have heard from one researcher of the Henry Co. VA Sumpter family...but no proof about Nancy. Ancestors of Martha SUMPTER - 23 Jan 2000 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- FIRST GENERATION 1. Martha SUMPTER. She was married to Abraham SUDDARTH. SECOND GENERATION 2. John SUMPTER was born about 1733 in Hanover Co., VA. He died in 1787 in Caldwell Co., NC. He was married to Catherine VAN PELT. 3. Catherine VAN PELT was born about 1737 in VA. She died about 1809. Surname Source: Walt and Patsy Pollock <waltpat@rmi.net> John SUMPTER and Catherine VAN PELT had the following children: i. John SUMPTER was born about 1765 in VA. ii. Henry SUMPTER was born about 1767 in VA. He died in 1860 in TN. iii. Thomas J. SUMPTER was born about 1769 in VA. He died in 1843 in Wayne Co., KY. iv. James SUMPTER. v. Elizabeth "Betty" SUMPTER. vi. Catherine SUMPTER. vii. William SUMPTER. viii. Mary "Polly" SUMPTER. 1 ix. Martha SUMPTER. THIRD GENERATION 4. William SUMPTER died in 1752 in Lousia Co., VA. Matilda Adams of California recently concluded extensive research into the films at the Latter Day Saints Library in Salt Lake City. Matilda engaged a professional researcher to help her search the records. LDS films #496700 and #1040483 contain parish records from Histon, Cambridge, England. The following data taken from these films proves that William and Elizabeth (IVERSON) SUMPTER are NOT the parents of General Thomas SUMTER. 1695 William SUMPTER born to Nicklas and Katherine (MATHEWS) SUMPTER. 9 Feb 1724 John IVERSON died in Histon, England. 1729 William SUMPTER married Elizabeth IVERSON (widow). 10 July 1740 Elizabeth SUMPTER, wife of William, dies in Histon, England. 20 May 1753 William SUMPTER dies in Histon, England. Several children born: John, Thomas, Mary, Ann, Elizabeth and Mary (also death records for some). Conclusion: Since all of the above events occurred in England, William SUMPTER and Elizabeth (IVERSON) SUMPTER apparently are not the William and Elizabeth SUMPTER of Louisa County, VA and whom we believe are the parents of: Captain William; General Thomas; John; Edmund; and Patience [(FRANKLIN) SUDDARTH]. The parents of General Thomas SUMTER, William and Elizabeth SUMPTER, died in Virginia. William's will was written 7 July 1752 and filed November 1752; and Elizabeth SUMPTER lived to be 111 years old. She lived with her daughter in Virginia until long after the Revolutionary War and died early 1800s in Virginia. (Source: Jane Sumpter Malone-George <jmgeorge@dubuque.net>) 5.
