I',m the one who has been sending the Obits to Sumpter/L. Do you know if spellinging of Sumpter (with a P) and Sumter, without a P, are same family or different lines, as I have people who are Sumpter who marry Sumter? Thanks, Judy >> Judy: I figured I may as well as jump into this conversation. I have the book, The Gamecock the life of Gen. Thos Sumter and in the book it notes that he spelled his name in one place as Sumpter and in another as Sumter. Suspect it is the same family with different spellings and then there is the possibility that the person taking the information on census couldn't spell and the name sounded like SUMTER and then it is also easier to pronounce with the P to separate the M and T. Try it both ways...or as a lot of people call Mrs. Sumpner and there is no N in it... Will get exact quote for you over the weekend... Bev Sumpter
