    3. I just got an advertisement in the mail for a Sumpter Family Newsletter from some organization in Midvale, Utah. The subscription rate is $12.00 per year (quarterly) or $36 for three years with the latter resulting in the subscriber receiving a free publication entitled The History of the Sumpter Family. Does anyone know anything about this? Jim Sumpter

    3. Several have asked where to obtain a copy of "The Gamecock" by Robert Bass. The owner of a local used book store gave me the following two people who indicated online that they had copies of the book: Mark Post Bookstore, San Francisco Joseph Natale, Chapel Hill, NC, 919-942-9200 Both sources would charge $30.00 for the book. I am not sure if postage was included in that cost or not. As I wrote earlier, I obtained a copy through interlibrary loan several years ago to read but have no idea if the book is still available on interlibrary loan. Jane Sumpter Malone-George

    1. Re: Richard Sumpter
    2. Well, to all of you possibly descended from Henry Sumpter and Agnes Dillon. I have been back from my trip to Virginia for awhile, but have been in the process of moving across town. Anyway, LeeAnn and I had a nice trip to Virginia, but just one tip. Dont go on a cross country trip hoping to do genealogy when your spouse could care less. I got to do about 6 or 7 hours total and that was under extreme pressure to get it over with. A couple of things. Spent a couple of nights in Martinsville the county seat of Henry County, Virginia. They have a great new courthouse but dont seem real helpful to a genealogist. Did not find anything new there. However, I was able to walk on what was the land of Henry Sumpter on the Smith river in Henry County. It is in now in what is Bassett, Va. About 5 miles northwest of Martinsville. You can see why they may have left for Tennessee. Except for right along the Smith river the area very hilly with only small patches of land for Agriculture. From the Chesterfield County Courthouse one new tidbit on Henry's probable Father, Richard. Page 7, Deed Book #4 John Martin of Chesterfield County to George Lovell of Same, for 24/5 pounds, land Martin purchased of Robert Wooldridge and where RICHARD SUMPTER now lives, near the upper end of Chesterfield County. 100 acres. Unless money is repaid to Lovell by 5/Nov/1759. Witness William Shepard and Matthew Chitwood and John Wooton. Recorded 05/Oct/1759. Once again Richard is tied to the Martin and Wooldridge names on deeds. I am still pursuing further records and will let you know if anything new comes up. Jim Landrum

Here is some of the information I have verified. I have copies of the following marriages of the John JONES/Sarah SUMPTER children: Elizabeth JONES m. Henry JACKSON 23 Jan, 1817 Clinton Co. OH Frankey JONES m. Samuel POFF 1 may 1817 Clinton Co. OH Sarah JONES m. Jacob BARRETT 5 Aug. 1818 Clinton Co. OH Lucy JONES m. Henry POFF 12 April 1821 Clinton Co. OH Abigail JONES m. Mathew POFF 11 May 1823 Clinton Co OH Sinthea JONES m. Charles SIMMONS 17 Nov. 1825 Randolph Co. OH Alice JONES m. Amos SUTTON 13 Mar 1828 Champaign Co. OH Anna JONES m. James Stapleton LEWIS 10 May 1833 Jackson Co. MO I also have a copy of the 1847 John JONES will in which he mentions his wife Sally and his eight daughters by their married names plus two children of his son Solomon (evidently deceased). Their names were Julian Jones REDPATH (I have her marriage record) and Jacob JONES. George and John were not mentioned. In a letter written by James Stapleton LEWIS to his brother Joel in 1855 he writes "My wife is sick at present...she is very low...she wishes to know how long her father has been dead. And she wishes to know whether her step-mother is still living." What I want to find out is whatever happened to Sarah SUMPTER the first wife of John JONES. Marion

    3. In response to an email forwarded to the Sumpter rootsweb by Beverley Sumpter, my card file has two women listed who married Eoff men in Newton Co, Arkansas: Letha age 19 married Jonathan Eoff age 20 on 1 Aug 1880 and Rachel age 17 married William Eoff age 21 on 1 Feb 1880. These records are from Newton Co Marriages by Vera Dean. According to Harold Sumpter of Turney, MO, these women were the daughters of John D. Sumpter, Sr., and his second wife Mary A. Liperd or Lawson. John D. married M.A. Liperd on 10 Oct 1867 in Newton Co, Arkansas. John D. Sumpter, Sr., was a son of Thomas and Elizabeth Coffey Sumpter of Burke Co, NC, and Wayne Co, KY. John D. was born 11 Jan 1811 in Burke Co, NC, and died about 1888 in Newton Co, Ark. John D. and his first wife, Rebecca Mullinex lived in Putnam Co, MO. John later moved to Arkansas. Harold Sumpter of Turney, MO, has researched and written two books about this line since he descends from John and Rebecca Mullinex Sumpter. Please contact me and I shall be happy to list the names of the children of John and Mary A. Liperd or Lawson Sumpter. I would appreciate having a list of the descendants of Letha for my files. 3. Three or four days ago there was an email giving the 18 June 1828 marriage date for William Sumpter and Elizabeth Iveson in Hanover Co, Va. I have never seen an original source for this record but I believe the date has been sealed into the Mormon records at Salt Lake City by Dr. Davison of Texas. Dr. Davison did considerable research about the Sumpter family and his findings are still very helpful to researchers. However, Dr. Davison believed that the above William Sumpter was a son of Nicklas and Katherine Mathews Sumpter of Histon, England. Later records have disproved this last fact since the William Sumpter, son of Nicklas, died in Histon and his death is recorded there. I also would very much like to know the origin of the marriage date for William and Elizabeth Iveson Sumpter - does anyone on the web also have this record but not from the Mormon records? 3. Hi I shall send what data I have on Sarah Sumpter Jones to you with a copy to the Sumpter rootsweb. Perhaps there are others out there who can help with Sarah's dates. According to very informative papers I received from Curtis Sumpter of Floyd, VA, Sarah was the daughter of George and Elizabeth Gross Sumpter of Charlotte Co, VA and later of Franklin Co, VA. Sarah married John Jones 5 July 1790 in Franklin Co. You stated that you had a list of children. Does this list agree with yours? Sally, Frankey, Elizabeth, Lucy, Abigail, Sinthea, Ally, Ann, Solomon, George, John. My list comes from the LDS microfiche and Lora Weatherman's book states that John and Sarah Jones lived in Randolph Co, IN, and that she died there in 1847. One note that I do have on my card is that daughter Ann was born 4 Nov 1807 and that she married James Stapleton Lewis. I shall be happy to hear from you and would like to add your line to my records to help other researchers. Thanks. Jane Sumpter Malone-George jmgeorge@dubuque.net

    1. Re: book "THE GAMECOCK"
    2. Jane Malone-George
    3. The book "The Gamecock" was written by Robert D. Bass and published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York. Several years ago, I obtained a copy through interlibrary loan. It is a decent account of General Sumter's life and does list only the following sibblings: William, Thomas, Patience and Anne. We know for sure that there was at least a brother John and a sister Martha. Most researchers seem to believe that Edmond of Charlotte Co, VA, is also a brother. William married Judith Randall (1) and had the following children: John married Ann Alexander; William (jr) married Jane ? and possibly a first wife; James married Nancy Jinkins: Thomas married Lydia Kirkpatrick; Elizabeth married Edward Owings or Owens; Amelia married ?Buckner; Fielding married Sarah ?; Judith married ? Randall and Livingston married Charlotte Temple. Tradition - according to William jr's wife Jane when she talked to Dr. Lyman Draper - says that following Judith Randall Sumpter's death, William remarried and became the father of a total of 19 children. To date, I have no record of a second marriage or who the woman was. Can anyone help? John married Catherine ? about 1762. Their children: John; Henry married Peggy Taylor; Thomas married Elizabeth Coffey; James; Catherine possibly married Hiram Geren; Betty married Richard Ramsey; William; Polly married Gabriel Loving; Martha married Abraham Sudderth. Thomas marrried Mary Cantey Jameson. They had only one surviving child: Thomas, Jr., who married Nathalie deLage about 1802. Patience married first John Franklin and had Anne, Dorcas, Elizabeth and Maria. Patience married second James Sudderth and had William, James, Agnes, Sally and Mildred. Ann married Thomas Land, Sr. Children unknown to me at this time. Edmond married Claudine (Anne) ? and had the following children: Mary Anne; William married Betsy Wheeler; Thomas married Mary Todd; Martha (Patsy); Aggy; John married Hanna Morrison; Susanna married L. Tackett; Andrew married Kezziah ?; and Nanny. Martha married William Sudderth in Albemarle Co, VA. I have no record of their children. Several people have given me this data and helped get it into the correct families. I am concerned that sons and daughters have been confused and given to the wrong parents but until we have better records, the above shall stand. Dr. Ward Sumpter of KY was my primary source. He conducted extensive research during his lifetime and shared it with me many years ago. Ward was a descendant of Edmond's son, William and Betsy Wheeler Sumpter. All clarifications and additions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jane Sumpter Malone-George jmgeorge@dubuque.net

    2. James Robert Sumpter
    3. To new and old subscriber's: A number of folks are showing descent from General Sumpter either directly or through his brothers and sisters. My question is exactly who are his brothers and sisters? Mormon records have them as: Patience, born 1729 William, born 1731 John, born 1734 Thomas, born 1734 (the General) Patience, born 1736 Edmund, born 1738 John, born 1740 Anne, born 1740 Dorcas, born 1742 Mrs. Penny Sumpter published a Sumpter family history that can be found in the Mormon records. She has them as Patience, William, Thomas, Edmund, John and Dorcas. The book, "The Gamecock" had them as William, Thomas, Patience, and Anne. Does anyone have any information that will clear this up? I would be very interested in what Jane Malone-George has in her outstanding files. Thank you evferyone for your help. Jim Sumpter
